Can one of these letters be sent to the original creditor (PDL) or do you have to wait until it goes to collections? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question I just don't understand all of this stuff.

The original creditor doesnt neccesarily have to "validate" the debt the same fashion a CA would according to fdcpa guidelines.

You can certainly send the pdl a letter asking them to validate or tell you how you owe a particular amount. The CA has to cease collection activity once you have issued a DV notice until they can validte the debt according to the FDCPA.

Its a good question...

Actually if it is the original creditor- you won't need a DV letter. Just ask them to provid you with a statemnt showing all the payments you have made since the start. You know the amount borrowed, so take taht, with what they give you as being paid, and see if it is correct..Good Luck.KAren
