I rec'd a collection notice - supposedly for a debt with the phone company over 12 years ago. Since the time limit to sue me is over in my state, can this be used against me on my credit report? I check it regularly, and have never seen anything from this phone company

Send this company a debt validation letter via certified mail/return receipt requested, and also state in the letter that the statute of limitations has expired for collecting on this debt.

Chances are this debt collector has purchased your debt and trying their luck to see if you'll actually pay. Don't send them anything. Keep checking your credit reports and if something does show up, dispute the item right away.
