I have some credit card debt that i cannot pay, due to my childs illness and I cannot work. I was planning on getting married and someone told me that i need to check into this before I get married. Is it true that te future spouse will be responceable for the debt?

I don't believe that it would affect your spouse, you can do the pre nup just to ensure the other persons safety in this matter. Are you going to work on paying the debt off? If so, becareful there, you may inadvertantly connect the person there, any joint loans taken out to cover the debt or etc. Just becareful on future action on taking care of the debt. goodluck

No I don't believe so. Your spouse should not be responsible for your debt in your name. Do be careful of joint accounts, however, as that will give responsibility to your spouse. When we got married, my credit is horrible, we put every asset we have in my husband's name. WE did this out of necessity since I couldn't get a loan or a credit card (even one with a high annual fee and apr) and I noticed that my husbands credit remained steady even though he married me. you should be ok but seek the advice of a debt professional to be sure. good luck and congrats on your up and coming marriage

It's all really going to depends on if these are still open accounts and if your spouce will use them dirring the marriage. It will also depends on if you live in a community property state as well.

However if they are closed now the only way it will affect him is if you try to open joint accounts. You bad credit will affect approval and/or what type of interest you recieve.

my spouses ex had several debts that were old charge offs-he gave her money to pay and she didn't pay bills at the time--and even though he still gets contacted from various individuals at times to pay these previous "charge-offs"more than 7 years old-- for a drastically reduced amount-- he didn't make these purchases and now we as a family are not responsible for them-- regardless of whatever some CA might try to insinuate! Don't be afraid to marry someone and move on with your life! go forward and be happy peace and God Bless! :P
