Best Way to Pay a Past Due Verizon Bill???
Date: Wed, 10/17/2007 - 21:28
I have a past due Verizon Bill that I want to pay ASAP! It's over $1000, but I should be able to pay this in a month or two. I pulled my credit report a little over a month ago and on Equifax and TransUnion have two different addresses.. and some 1-800 #s. They haven't been able to contact me because I didn't get my mail forwarded since I moved until recently, but on top of that I don't feel like calling them up and dealing with the nastiness that could be. Problem is, I don't know if it was sold off to a collection agency yet. It says "Charged Off" on both accounts. These are the addresses I have:
PO Box 1850
Folsom, CA 95630
10734 International Dr.
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670
Anyone have any idea how I should approach this?? I want to pay it off in a few payments - I just don't have it all at once.
Any advice??

There's no collection agency listed. Just their actual addresses. I don't know if it's been handed over to a collection agency yet, I have some other past due bills and those that have been handed over show the CA address.

Hi Mike...honestly, call them up and find out for sure. You dont want your $$ floating around in mid-air. If you get someone on the phone who is a jerk, hang up and call back.
I know the Folsom address is valid...I pass by that building on my way to my office daily.

Yes, please call them, don't worry about nastiness some of your reps will be polite and some won't. my sister worked for Verizon and she said the rude reps were reprimanded or fired instantly. Verizon needs customers and I'm sure they will work with you on your payments, but the main thing is to find out exactly what the charge off means, and who officially owns your debt
chances are if you're nice to the person on the other end of the phone they'll return the favor because they deal with so many angry and rude customers :) if not, do what someone suggested, hang up and find someone who is reasonable to work with!

Well I took your advice. I did get a really nice person on the phone, however, she wasn't really able to work with me.
Apparently my debt was sold off to a CA, then sold back to them?? If that makes sense. They were willing to settle today for 80% of the bill, but I didnt' have (nearly $900) on me to do that. They said as long as that my bill is "in house" at Verizon, they were willing to accept the 80% but unfortunately she didn't know how long that would be for. She said a CA could pick up the debt like that and then I wouldn't be able to deal with Verizon any more.
I gave them an updated address, but I really hope they didn't record my phone #.. it was my work phone. I have no problem paying this thing back in a resonable time frame, but she said they weren't able to work out payment arrangements. Sigh. Hopefully all works out, I really want to get this paid off. It makes it hard to sleep at night.

Since they won't entertain a payment arrangement, you could try sending a letter (CMRRR) explaining that you just can't come up with a lump sum but want to 'do the right thing'. Include a money order for a payment you can afford. If they cash the money order, then just keep doing it. If they send the MO back, then just keep a copy of the letter(s) you sent and start saving each month until you have the full amount and then talk to them about a settlement pay off. If they try to take you to court you can show the judge you tried to make reasonable payments but they were sent back.
If it goes to a CA again, go through the DV process and then do the same thing...offer payments and keep track of your correspondence.

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to resolve a past due balance of $1,100 on account #xxxxxxxx. I spoke with a representative on the phone today after calling your Resolve Dept. phone number, who unfortunately was not able to set up payment arrangements. She made notation in my account that a proposal was offered to settle my account, however I am not able to come up with a lump sum of the amount at this time. I am suggesting a payment plan of $200/month, with the first payment to be mailed on November 1st, and subsequent payments being mailed on the last day of each month after, until the balance is paid in full. Please advise me in writing if this offer of settlement in this matter is acceptable. Sincerely |

Even though they stated on the phone they were unable to accept a smaller anount- send payment anyway!!!!!!! They will not refuse it. Because you are making some sort of payment, it may stay in house with Verizon and not trasferred to a CA (not to sure about this theory!).

I changed it a little bit. I'm going to send them $110 today, as long as I can get a good letter sent out.
If they accept the $110, they can still send it to a CA according to the representative I spoke with today.

Remember- collectors will lie! All they want is their money, and will say anything they think will presure you in paying more. Sending ANY money on a consitant basis will show you ARE being responsible and attempting to pay your debt, however are restricted by your current financial situation.
As to your letter, it looks good to me. You may want to change the last line, though. It looks as though you are asking them for permission. You need to be a bit more firmer, and let them know this is the only payment plan you can afford at the current moment. Don't give them a chance to say no.
You may also want to provide them with two signed copies of your letter, and ask them to sign one and send it back to you. That way you have something for your records.
