I am sitting here at work and my phone rings. I have caller ID on my office phone and the unidentified number symbol came up. I answer and a woman asks for me, but she completely messes up my name. I corrected her and said it was me. She proceeded to say that she was collecting on behalf of Jiffy Cash (???) and I have a balance of $1400 for a loan taken out in 2001. I stated I do not have any outstanding debt and never heard of Jiffy Cash. She said she had "all the proof" that I took the loan out and I needed to give her my banking information today or the account will be sent to "legal." I asked her what her company's name was and she said she was collecting on behalf of Jiffy Cash. I said I know that, but what company is she working for. She then said "I already told you and you are stalling, so I am going to mark this as refusal to pay and you can deal with legal." What is legal, I said. She said "that mean you going to get sued now for bank fraud." OK...what happens with that, I said. She said once she puts all the paperwork through legal, they alert my sheriff's office and I would be arrested "probably by the weekend." Arrested? For debt? Hmmmm...I think not. But then I said that it would be an interesting situation that I am arrested for not paying a company that refuses to even give their name. She hung up.

Two minutes later, I receive another call from "Miss Gray" from the same company (from LEGAL!!!!), who tells me that I needed to take care of this today. Again, I asked what company she was with and she said Jiffy Cash. OK...then Jiffy Cash needs to validate the debt. No we don't, she said. I asked her if she was a lawyer and she said yes. So I said that if I were about to be sued, I needed to know the company name, law firm, lawyer, etc. She said her name is "Miss Gray." No first name? You don't need my first name, she said. How are you going to file a suit if you don't have a first name? I also need to confirm your membership to the state's bar association. She got soooooooooooooooooo mad!!! She started screaming at me on the phone saying I needed to pay this bill and stop playing games. What happened to the lawsuit??? And me being arrested??? I was so looking forward to meeting you in court. I never met anyone without a first name.

She slammed the phone down. So I went to our IT department and asked them to look up the call. It was recorded and the call was from Certified Recovery Services. I called back and asked for the legal department and the guy said "what legal department." HAHHAHA. So I finally get transferred to Miss Gray and told her that the call was recorded and I was turning it over to the FTC. She "I don't know who you are or what you are talking about."

You know what...I am going to sue them.

Waterbug! You definitely made my day; while ruining some smart-@$$ CA's day!
I hope you sue them and, please, keep us posted on your progress.

Some of them are just so stupid...ugh! I was in debt long enough and have been harrassed so bad by some collectors that I REFUSE to let this slide. I am 100% debt free. I paid all of my debts in full...never a settlement. I had 2 payday loans in the past and both were paid. I called this Jiffy Cash this afternoon and they have no record of me receiving a loan. They said they have me listed in their system as a referral from a partner site, but no loan. When I explained what happened, he asked me for the company contact information. I said I have the number and the name of the company, but if you want first names, you are out of luck. He laughed. He said Jiffy Cash uses United Legal (ughhhhh!!!!!) and a place called Recovery Solutions something or other. He said he did not think they used this company. I asked if there would be another company using Jiffy Cash and he did not know. He was very nice, I have to say and said he was going to contact a superior to look into it. He laughed about the first name thing because he said it is a tactic used for collection agencies to make it more difficult to identify specific people to file complaints or lawsuits. I said I figured as much.
