With all of these posts and horror stories, surely there must be some company out there that is doing a good job. I need help and with litterly hundreds of companies doing this, there must be a few that will work with you as an individual. What is the concensus out there? Are there some good companies and who are they?

I just found this site. Does this site endorse companies? I am starting to think it is probably better to just do it yourself and see what you can negotiate with each.

You certainly can do it your self. Towards the top center of the page you'll find a "Do It Yourself" link. Here, you'll find all sorts of free sample letters to use.

You can also click on the free consulatation link to the right of the page, and someone will call you to review your options. Be aware, though, that whoever calls you is NOT endorsed by this web page, you still haveto research them. But at least you can explore your options.

Whatever you do, DON'T select one of the many companies out there that offer a credit repair kit. Most of them promise to have your credit report wipeed out. This CAN NOT be done, unless what is reported is inaccurate. Many of these companies also suggest and help you obtain a new social security number, and hence a "clean" credit however this is illegal!!! And many other companies provide you with sample letters; however you can find free samples of the same exact letters out there onthe web.

If you are going to do it yourself, you can use these message boards as guidance. You'll find great advice from people who have "been there, done that"!

If you are doing it yourself, first step is to pull all three credit reports and review for accuracies. Your are entitled to one free report per year from each of the companies. Once you have your report, you'll need to send out a DV letter (debt validation letter) to each of the companies; mailing via USPS and sending in Certified Return Receipt Requested (CRRR). You'll want to note in these letters that all phone communications must cease, and be done via USPS only.

Following the above steps will (a)stop harrasing phone calls, (b)let you see where you stand in debt, (c)help you form a plan to proceed to clear such debt.

Good Luck!

I know the forum doesn't endorse any company's (however it would be nice if it did) but does the rest of the site endorese just "Superior Debt"?
Sorry, but after a year at looking at all the crooks in this business, I am a little skeptical. It sounds like every company out there does a few of them right each year but with my luck, I sure don't want to get involved with a bigger mess than I already have. Someone must have the answer?

I have just completed my program with the PDR GROUP. I finished 4 months ahead of the schedule. The people I worked with were all very nice and helped me for the past 2 1/2 years.
They were always available to answer my questions, and I was very happy that I could call and get answers all the time. I have recommended them to other friends who are in the program now. I will continue to reccommend the PDR Group.
They did a great job for me, and saved me almost $45,000.00!!! I was amazed.

i worked with a great settlement company and passed it on to a few co-workers who are very happy with thier program so if your interested check out my blog and you can see my own personal story.

but also remember you can do it yourself many do, it just wasnt the right option for me. If you have any questions about how these programs work or whatever just ask!

If you read these forums and have the time and patience to spend doing it, I think MOST of the times you can do it yourself. In my opinion, if you are in debt, why PAY someone to help you save your own money? But some people can't deal with the time and stress, or (don't take this wrong) are lazy and wouldn't actually spend the time to do it themselves, so it can be an option for some.

i personally went through the debt settlement company because i couldnt deal with the stress of it all. the calls all day and even after hours, the threats, calling my family and telling them about my debts,(all of wich are illegal by the way) my debt was causing me to have health issues. To me it was worth to pay to pass the buck onto someone else who knew better than I did about business such as this.
