I was a geek. I liked English. But my FAVORITE thing to do was be "teacher's aide". Where I lived before, the schools required a lot more than they do where I live now. So I had a lot of the requirements already. So for the last two years of high school, I was "teachers aide" for 1/2 day every single day. I got to grade papers, etc. It was fun. Oh. When I wasn't in detention. LOL!

Ya know i was just kidding but to go off topic for a little bit... 2 things: First, here they took away ALL recesses in schools which i think stinks! The kids need the social time! All they get is enough time to have lunch then back to class... my son doesnt' eat most of the time cuz he'd rather socialize!
Now the second, which is REALLY, REALLY sad... on Friday a 5th grader at a local middle school, 10 years old, was found hanging in a bathroom by another student. :( What in the world could be so terrible for a 10 year old to hang himself? Our community is devastated!
:(

I know you were kidding. But recess is important for socialization and for the kids to get out some of there energy so they can focus better on their studies. They started to eliminate recess here but too many people complained so they put it back in albeit at a smaller time frame.
That is devestating for your community. My prayers are with his family and the poor child that found him. To think that a 10 year old felt his life was that hopeless..it is a shame.

Ang- how horrible for him and his family- my prayers are with them.
There are so many pressures on kids today-too many.
When my youngest was in 5th grade one of his best friends was found hanging in a tree on Thanksgiving holiday- they never did determine if it was an accident or not---so sad..
My favorie subject was pre-med biology-----just joshin'-mine was Lunch  karen

Yea what could possibly be so terrible for a 10 year old? :( We have found out he used his lanyard from his school id to hang himself with. We'll see what becomes of this....
Ok so did that many of u gals like school lunches or just the recess part?? Our lunches were YUCKO! Well at that age they were, we didnt' have the pizza, hamburgers, salad choice, HOT lunch that's it! Wasn't all that good either!
Of course i'm kinda picky so that might be why.

Our school lunces were awsome in elementary school, we ordered out every day...I went to private school, we did not have a cafeteria. In high school, I went home for lunch. Oh..and I hated school, I was in gifted, took ap classes and the expectations were way too high and I did not have a favoriet subject. I just went for the socialization and boys....

Ang, The good thing was my mom worked at my school as a teacher so I got away with murder. I think I "skipped" more days in my senior year than I attended. I say "skipped" becuase my mom would sign me out. I also went to college 1/2 day two days a week and had perfected the whole skipping class thing beofre I went away to college.

Rox i also missed more days my senior year than i attended! ha ha Of course once I got to college i didn't have the option to skip. If i did i'd NEVER be able to keep up!!! I'm one of the ones that had to study and work hard for my grades. (not like the lucky ones who just read it over)
But i was telling my son the other day, i missed 40 days of school my senior year. They're allowed 7! He almost passed out!

P.S. And i really NEVER had detention a day! I, also, went to small Catholic school.

There is something to be said for Catholic Education  I went to a large college and lucky or me I had 12 credits to transfer. My first two years I had to study my butt off. Once I got to my major life was much easier. Only if I could go back

Volley, I took calculus also. It definitely wasn't my favorite subject. I always said I was an average student in above average classes.
My favorite subject was a class called "Science Fiction/Twilight Zone". It was a literature class. And no, I'm not or wasn't ne of those sci-fi techy dudes. (Not saying that's a bad thing, in case it applies to anyone). It was just a really fun class. The teacher was awesome.
I really loved school lunches, especially in high school. We had pizza just about everyday. Breakfast was good also, cinnamon rolls!
I used to get beatup for my lunch money. But the joke was always on them, I was on free lunch!

I gave the problem to one of my math wizzards and have not seen him since..... Karen, I had to maintain straight A's or i was grounded. It may have had something to do with the fact that I like to skip school and was a rather rebellious teenager.

Ugh...I hated school! Not so much the school work (was pretty much an A/B student in most classes, except government...got a C), but because of the kids I went to school with. Was a small town, old families, they didn't like blacks or military people hardly at all. Well growing up military, it didn't matter to me what color someone was if I liked them. But I had the military strike against me, 2nd strike was the fact that my dad is Polish, 3rd stike was that I felt bad for the kids that were picked on all the time and took their sides against those that were picking on them, so that put me in that catagory. It was so bad that I had became suiciadal (sp). I worked from the time I was 12 years old, which I enjoyed more than school. If I had to choose a subject, it would be my business classes. My teacher was our next door neighbor. Would not go back to High school for nothing.
Did not go to kindergarten...started first grade at a Catholic school and got my first school spanking from a nun because I refused to do my exercises! LOL She used a ping pong paddle and would hit the same place on my leg each time until I did my jumping jacks. Became very close to that teacher and then she got killed in a car wreck.
My kids both went to a Catholic school until we moved to NC. Not one close by where we live, so they had to go to public school.
Recesses for elementary kids are almost nill and when they do have it, tag, and a bunch of other games are not allowed to be played because the kids could accidentally "touch" someone the wrong way. Kids are not allowed to give hugs to each other or teacher, might be considered "sexual". Middle and high schoolers don't even get breaks! I remember we use to get almost 1 hour for lunch and we did have a 10 minute break in the morning and one in the afternoon to where we could go outside. We had 8 classes a day, not 4 blocks and driver's ed was taught during school hours and not after school. My kids hate the block system here. They say it gets boring. I would imagine! Having to sit in a class room on the same subject for almost 1 1/2 hours, well I know I would get bored also. And....the kids have so many "student vacation" days that it isn't funny.

Damn 2ndband, you really hit the nail on the head. Not sure about the catholic school stuff, but the way schools are nowadays. Driver's ed was a class we could take in school, got credit for it, etc.
I don't know about sitting in a classroom for 1 1/2 hours though, that doesn't sound bad. I mean think about it, you're in the Air Force? Have you ever stood watch? hahahah, I know it was probably longer than 1 1/2 hours!! But I guess for kids that must seem like an eternity?

Sub ~ No I am not in the Air Force, but my son has enlisted. He leaves for Basic on January 29, 2008. Been an Army brat, Navy wife and now an Air Force mom! LOL
If I were in school now and I had to sit in a class that I hated, like Government or something like that, I don't know if I could stand it. Or being an unpopular kids and playing dodgeball and for 1 1/2 hours of having someone throwing those dang red balls that sting at you....nope, not for me!!! To be honest, if each class was taught each day, I really think kids could retain more of the information for the end of the year tests. Here they have EOGs or EOCs, depending on whether one is in HS or not. HS has End Of Courses test (EOC) and the younger ones have End of Grade Tests (EOG). These kids have to pass these tests at the end of the year (which covers quite a bit of what they studied in school, most of it is reading and math, but depending on when one had a math course...) and if they do not pass these tests, they do not pass to the next grade. This really puts a lot of pressure on these kids starting 2nd or 3rd grade. Some kids just do not test well, but can get all A's and B's during the year and still fail their EOG or EOC. They can retest and the parents can try to dispute it, but the dispute goes before the school board....so can go either way.
Wow, so you've seen all sides then. God bless you for all you've
Wow, so you've seen all sides then. God bless you for all you've done for this country. Good luck to your son by the way.
I'm just glad I'm not in school anymore!
Well, actually, I had fun back then, no bills, surrounded by girls all day, free lunch ;), weekends off, etc etc etc. Damn, it wasn't that bad afterall!
