I recently had a debt collection agency, Academy Services of Philadelphia, call my mother, tell her I was convicted of fraud and that I was a convict on the run and informed of my debt. When I called back they informed my of the debts they had and that they would sue unless I paid. This does violate Federal Debt Collection practices, right?

You bet it does! They cannot give out info to a third party, let alone tell them you are a convict on the run-that's a new one for me, or that they will sue, unless they intend to do so.

I would get in touch with a consumer attorney that handles this type of thing and see what they say.

Also, keep notes of everything they say and when.

Have you sent them a debt validation letter yet-if not, I would do so

Good luck-keep us posted..karen :D

I discovered they actually collected the debt from a previous Debt collection agencies - Client Services, which pulled the same shtick, calling my family, threatening to garnish my wages, etc.

I had another one, Van Ru Credit, go so far as to simply go into my bank account and take $500 - with no warning, no message, no written authorization. My bank worked with me on it and I got that money back and my bank went so far as to suggest I move my money to a new account.

I just got a call from them he was very rude. I received on before and he told me I needed to come up with a better excuse when I told him that I was out of work and had no money. The next time they called I told them do you want the truth or me to make up a lie. If you send them a letter that they are only to contact you by mail they have to do it is what I was told.
