back in 1998 she had a credit card sent to her in the mail and an unsavory person got it from the mailbox and used it up to the maximum and she did report it stolen to the credit card company. we never heard anything else about it.

You must send them a debt validation letter immediately. They are one of the worst debt collectors out there. Do not let them intimidate you. If you go to the do it yourself section of this site you will find a sample letter there. Use it as a model but tailor it to your specific situation. Cbar, listen to Frog though. Send a debt validation letter. That will stop all collection activity for 30 days. If they send you the information then you will know more about the debt. If it is from the stolen card then you can fight it that way. But you need to know what the debt is before you can fight it.
