Over my head.
Date: Mon, 11/05/2007 - 15:33
I have had a very rough year financially. Multiple hospital visits coupled with ambulance rides (no insurance) have filled my mailbox with COLLECTIONS letters every day. I can't even muster the courage to open them all and sort them out.
Is there ANY way to get a printout of exactly how much I owe and to whom? This has all hit me like an avalanche.. i don't know which way is up.
I feel like if i can see them all on one sheet of paper, I can begin to have an idea of what to do next. As of now, I feel helpless and clueless. I don't know what my best option will be.. i feel like a kid flailing his arms in frustration.
any feedback is greatly appreciated.

welcome to the forum future man :) You have come to the right place for help, everyone here is so wonderful.
I know more help will be along soon, but perhaps you could answer a couple of questions to help get the ball rolling :)
First of all did you visit same hospital each time?
Secondly is the ambulance service through the hospital or through a 911 service, or a town/county service?
If each visit was to teh same hospital, you should be able to simply call the hospital and ask for a print out of services and fees so you know how much you owe them. I would also explain your situation to them and that right now you are not financially able to pay this bill. I know our local hospital has a program for those of us without insurance where they gave me a 15% discount right off the top, and a charity discount program where they match a percentage of what was paid. So it would not hurt to ask if they have any assistence programs or discounts for paying cash payments with no insurance.
As far as the ambulnce goes like i said it depends on who the service was through as far as who to contact for a list of service fees.
Hope this helps you out somewhat:)
I can totally relate to feeling like your drowning and have no idea anymore which way is up. Trust me it does get better :)
Also once you figure out who you owe what to, I would suggest calling our debtcc for a free consaltation. The number is 1-800-601-1579
Like I said I hope some of that helps

Hi future man...welcome to the forum. You will not be able to get a printout of all the services you had on one sheet. However, you can call each service (ambulance, hospital, etc.) and ask for an itemized listing of the services you had this year. Once you see what you owe to each company, you can give them a call and setup payment arrangements with them. I have found that most businesses dealing with medical services are willing to work with people on a payment plan.

The others are right- there are programs that can help with the hospital bills. In my area you can file a Title 19, I believe, and alot of it is written off. Ask to speak with the Human resources person at the hospital and see what happens. I have a good friend who is a DR., and he has told me that hospitals and DRs have certain amounts that they write off each year..
I know exactly about the helplessnes, and hoplesness, but there are solutions.
If you want, register with us, it's free, and see what the credit counselors have to say about your situation, then you will know what you may be able to do,if you need to...Best of luck and feel free to ask questions..karen

Karen is very right...I actually just applied for a hardship assistance program here at our hospital and we can fall into four categories. well it turns out that we fell into the 100% coverage and it took all of 10 minutes providing the hospital with three paystubs that have 'year to date' figures on them and a 2006 statement. i couldn't believe how easy it is. here it's the outpatient services, for you it may be different. I'm sure the Human Resources office will direct you to where you need to go.
I know how terribly difficult it is to open all those letters, future, but try to breathe, know you have lots of people here to help you, and make a comprehensive list of what your debts are and to who. and yes yes yes try the free consultation if you haven't already. that way you'll have figures to give to a professional who will contact you from this site. p lease keep in touch. you have tons of support, hang in there, i2 is right...it does get better.
