My wife and I currently have about 51,000 in credit card/loan debt. All of it is unsecured. We are still in a positive cash flow, but barely. Other than my debt/income ratio being lopsided, I have perfect credit. We have tried getting consolidation loans, but no one will talk to us due to our debt/income. Is debt settlement the right course of action and what long term impact will it have on our credit history.

Hi Tribepal

Welcome to the forums. As duanejenna was also having some queries regarding debt consolidation versus debt settlement1, I have explained the concept very minutely in the thread given below.

Do not go for a debt settlement because it will leave a negative impact in your credit report for a long period of time. It will keep hurting your credit file consistently. It should only be opted only if you are considering bankruptcy as the ultimate option and just won't be able to make the consolidation payments.

Some benefits of the consolidation program have been discussed in the page given below. It is becoming a very popular mode of completing the payments with your creditors.

Do let me know if you have any queries unsolved.
