Well, so far I have contacted 2 debt management places. The first was a referral from this site. I currently have $5200 in credit card debt. They want a start-up fee of $199, then I make a monthly payment of $167--$30.00 of this is their monthly fee. They say they can get this debt paid off in 48 months. My concern with this place is they wanted my banking info right then, before I even got anything in writing. The other place I contacted is ClearPoint credit counseling. The have no start-up fee, and I pay $193 a month--$35.00 of this is their monthly fee. They say they can get me out of this debt in around 55 months. They never asked for any banking info, said that I will receive a packet of info in the mail within the week. I'm SO confused!!

mslisa....when I was looking for a company...I waited to get the paperwork in the mail to see how it was written and what it included. I also went to the BBB and checked to see if there were any complaints on the one's I had choosen. I then called them back and asked questions...one of them seemed irritated that I had questions and I scratched them off my list. Do your homeowrk on them and ask the questions...if they can't answer or don't like it...then don't go with them. As for the first one...call back and tell them you would like to see "theri packet" of info before deciding...and then check the BBB....Good luck!!

Yea, the first one really kind of made me nervous, because I told them that I was not comfortable with giving out my banking info without seeing anything in writing, (I did have her on the phone for quite awhile asking different questions). Well she sounded irritated and told me "would I talk to you this long if this was some kind of scam, if I was running a scam I wouldn't have stayed on the phone with you this long, I would have just hung-up a long time ago". She pretty much refused to send me anything in writing without my banking info. Hummmmmm, my gut feeling is sending me red flags here. I looked on the BBB and couldn't find them on there. On the caller id it shows up as Massachusetts 978-681-1543, not sure what that means, because they claim to be in Maryland. Now the other one ClearPoint is on the BBB and has a satisfactory rating. Now these people went over all my expenses and gave me ways to cut out some of my spending, and they never asked for my banking info--just told me that they would be sending me a package with all the info I had given them, a budget, and all the info on what I would be paying, etc. Right now I am waiting for Care One to call back and talk to them and see what they can do for me.

Go with your gut feeling. If something doesn't sound right to you, then trust that feeling.

The company I went with (recommended from here) asked for my banking info, but they were more than happy to take a money order instead & understood I didn't want to give out my banking info. There was a start up fee ($400 on a debt of about $18,000...then each month $40 goes to them). That was fine with me, as they had a good BBB rating. They even faxed me a contract & told me to take my time, read it & call with questions. Personally I wanted something in writing. Once I signed the contract I sent in the money.

Shop around, definately use the BBB & this site. We've all had varied experiences & can help you!

Well I got the name of the credit management company who was wanting my banking information before even sending any info. Its called Capital Law Group. They claim to be out of Maryland, but when I did an online search of their phone number it comes up as a residental listing in Maryland. Does anyone know anything about this company?

mslisa...I too would go with the gut feeling...I did and I don't regret it at all. I googled CLG and couldn't find any info on them at all...I thought I saw something on our site about them...but in re: to a collection agency. Maybe they do both...but it looks like Clearpoint is your best bet right now...
