Further more, for any more of these flamers that happen to read this, if you got a problem with a community helping each other figure out ways to settle their debts and help educate others of their rights under federal laws because some collection agency is breaking the law, tough crap. Go cry your river elsewhere, then build a bridge and GET OVER IT! Coming on here to spread the kind of garbage that I talked about at the start of this topic is just a waste of space and your just wasting our time, and yours. If you want to add something constructive or intelligent then feel free to do so, otherwise GTFO.

They don't accomplish anything, when I see those kind of posts I just think "oh god, here's another one" then I just kind of mentally delete it. It gets filed under those brief moments in time in my life that I wish I could have back.

If I feel a "guest" post has even a hint of animosity I just don't respond and I wish others would begin to adapt that poilicy. It does no good to debate with someone who hides themselves behind a guest ID because they can't own up to who they are on the forums. I think people would be suprised at who had a user name here and a "guest" ID to show their true selves.

My point exactly, things are not always as they seem. I'm sure the flamebaits that sometimes post here are right, I'm sure there are some out there who generate debts with no intention to pay them back. But not everyone is like that. From what I've seen so far on this board nobody here is like that.

I guess it's something that we will never really know. It's hard to tell someone's profession if they choose not to tell it. I do know for a fact they can tell if an ip matches someone who is a registered user here and also post anon.

Al-righty then! And how do we REALLY feel, lol?? I frankly couldn't agree with every word of your post more, but it's hard to actually ban someone, right? I know it's been done, but I can count on one hand the number of people that have been banned from the site.

then why cant they prevent them from posting anon if already registered? would prevent a lot of suspicions people have of registered members posting anon on the side

isn't it true that ip signal is different if wireless -lap top - on an airplane or home connection- and with keyloggers or multiple users in home it only traces area of service where signal is coming from? thats why I thought most napster cases couldn't be effectively prosecuted- this sight can however prove who sent message fiy? if they can then they should block all anon post if they can prove was from registered member

The IP address is assigned by the Internet Service Provider, and usually is different depending where you are connected to the internet. Someone logging onto the site from a work computer will have a different IP address than the computer they use at home.
The problem I see is that most ISP's use dynamic addressing. In other words, you don't always have the same IP address. Think of your IP address just like a phone number -- now imagine if the phone company changed your phone number every time you picked up the phone to dial out -- whoever you call would always see a different CallerID. That's exactly what happens with IP addresses, the ISP is always assigning your computer a different number. And so this site can ban an individual IP, but it doesn't matter because the next time that person comes here they won't be using that banned IP.

okay so how then does fiy know for a fact that they can trace ip to registered member? is there something top secret here that no one else has heard of? debtcruncher what are the facts fiy is talking about about how they can tell from ip address who it is?

I'm sure this site has logs, and it can track what IP address a member was using when they logged in. But that doesn't guarantee they will always be using that IP address every time they log in...
I'm sure if admin did a query on my logins, they would see my IP changes once a week or more. Heck, I can turn my computer off, reset my router, and come back in 5 mins with a new IP address.

Getting to what FYI was saying ...
Right now my IP address is 75.57.122.128 . If I post as Debtcruncher, or if I log out and post as a guest, it will still be that same IP associated with either post. That's how Admin can tell, because nobody else in the world is using that IP address at this particular point in time.
But getting to what you're saying -- Why can't Admin plug 75.57.122.128 into some program and only allow DebtCruncher to make posts from that IP; and not allow me to post as guest if they know that is my IP?Well, maybe they can, but tomorrow I might not be using that IP address.
It's just too much work for Admin to stay on top of.

my point exactly debtcruncher and my other point was even if same ip adress shows up - is it actually them? I saw case where fbi busted in on 11 year old boys home computer who alledgedly downloaded child **** but it was actually someone else flying over the friendly skies who keylogged into that ip address I am still wondering about fact fiy stated ?from what i have seen ip address can be blocked but never proves who actually sent message- debtcruncher do you agree or am i wrong? and how about if you have 4 computers in home? was it you or someone else using isp?

what about if you log in on 3 different internet providers? considering location and job site and what state or country you are in the ip is still the same if you log in at different times or have family using your provider 1000 miles away ?

You're right. Several computers can be on the same private network, while using the same public IP. I've got another computer in my living room, and I could run in there and login to this site on that computer, and still be using the same IP.
Also if someone has a wireless network that does not have encryption, it is possible for someone to be outside the house with a wireless card and join in that network, which they would then be sharing that public IP address.
BUT we can get a bit technical and move up to the TCP layer to see what ports I am using. The computer I'm on now might be connected on port 3390, while the computer in my living room could connecting to this server on port 3492. Same IP, different ports.
I just don't know how technical this webserver is, and whether it can actually track the ports or not.

At the same time? Or just in general throughout the day?

Family logging in 1000 miles away will definitely have a different IP, because it is a different geographic location. Unless they are going to VPN into your private network, then out to the public side, in that case they might have the same IP as you. As to the rest of that question, it just depends on network settings; whether you are using dynamic or static IP - when the DHCP lease is up and your IP renews is all up to your ISP.

I will say that we can correlate among IP addresses. But correlation does not prove causation. Basically I agree with you, an IP address of itself cannot prove anything.

This subject has been covered in the past. Our Admin has server logs that would show the ip address of every registered member who logs in here. By comparing guestip to member list it can be determined if a member has more than one id here. If that person has a static ip it can be proven with some certainty. If their ip provider use dynamic ip it becomes more difficult to prove. I do not understand why someone would post as a guest if they are a member of our forum. Every time this happened in the past,it was just to cause trouble with our forum. Our Admin team decides on who to ban as our moderators do not have those permissions.

Yes I agree and I'm new to this and I really need help and I don't need anyone to put me or anyone else down, that's why we are here to help each other. It's a war going on, people are broke, and yes it's away out..Some people don't know a struggle until they've been through the trenches!

Ya know..............everyone is on here for the same thing. Everyone is in the 'same boat'. We want to help ourselves and help others ( hopefully). I have 'caught', on different places, on this forum, where someone wants to make negative remarks, however..............they don't have an ID...Just 'Guest'. I don't believe people want to argue with other people, on this forum. As I said, 'we' are here to help.
