Can I consolidate my debt without taking a severe hit to my credit? ALl the programs I have talked to want me to stop paying my bills and take a severe credit hit fot 2-4 years.

Hi margaret, can you get a loan through your bank or another source and basically consolidate them yourself? If you can get a loan to pay all of your debts off and be left with only the loan payment, then you won't hurt your credit. But that's the only way I know of.

Someone with more knowledge should be here shortly to give you more information.

Best of luck!

Hi Margaret, this really depends on your current credit score and your situation. i went through credit counseling and it didn't do that bad of a deal on my score, of course my credit was down the toilet in the first place because I was late several days paying most of my creditors. If you're credit is relatively good or is good/solid then you may want to try consolidating yourself and there are some options that I would talk to a debt professional about, namely contacting one from this site (use the free consultation option under 'our services) and see what they have to say. that would probably be the first thing to do if you havne't yet. I see you're new so it's an option for every member to use this once
