You really should set up another account at an entirely different bank.
It's a pain but the PDL's are very sneaky and if they find out that you closed an account on them and they get access to the new account they will try and take you for everything you have.

I think what I will do is go to my bank and talk to the branch manager to see what they can and cannot do. I do want to pay these places the base amount, it is only that by paying even the interest I won't be able to pay my rent, electric, etc. I don't think I can redirect my direct deposit by my next paycheck so I will see what the bank has to say. I have been with them along time and am in good standing so I will see how they can handle things. If they give me a hard time I will go to another bank.

That is always a good place to start. My bank was very cooperative and understanding. I was able to open another account at the same bank and so far (3 months and counting) I have not had any problems.

jan, if your unable to close the account at the moment, go to the branch and speak with the manager. Tell them you need to put your account on "deposit only". That way your direct deposit will be able to go in; however, nothing can go out. Get all your stuff straightened out to another account. You need a new account. However, this might hold you over during the transition. Make sure they know that you need a hard debit block so nothing comes out. Get your payroll to give you a paper check if you need to until you have a new bank account.
