I've been getting some sort of automated calls lately [for the last few weeks]. The phone rings, and there's nothing... Maybe a couple of clicks, but that's about it. Various speech on my part [hello, hi, etc.] gets no response.

I don't have caller ID, so I use *69 to get the number. *69 on these calls gives me a noisy recording that says this:

Anybody else getting these? Got any idea who/what it is?

From my understanding, these types of calls are computer generated and are usually from telemarketing companies. What happens is, the computer is programmed to call telephone numbers throughout various times of the day to see what time frame you answer. This is to assist telemarketers so they will have a rough idea when you will be available to contact. I'm not completely certain, this is something I read on a blog somewhere on the Internet. I also read that when you receive these calls, you should repeatedly press the # button on your phone, this supposedly confuses the computer and knocks your number off their calling list. I've never tried it, so I have no idea if it really works, or not.

I'd be interested in seeing that blog, if you've got a link available. I am on the do-not-call registry, so it shouldn't be a telemarketer. Any help you can provide would be most welcome. This isn't a big deal, more of a minor annoyance. I have enough minor annoyances in my life as is, kinda like to start reducing them.

I've been recieving calls from guys named John, Sam and Tim, who all have foreign accents, (India??) who ask me questions about medication i take!! I only take ONE maintenance med and they are NOT asking about that one.... mostly asking about anti-anxiety meds. SO finally after many many calls the other day i asked Sam, how can u send me anxiety meds with NO prescription?!?! His answer to me, well we're the biggest owned pharmacy in the US. Umm.... OK, so that still does NOT answer my question!! He had NO answer. I've told them time and time again to lose my number yet i get at least 5 or more calls a day from them.
Anyone else having this problem??

That sounds fishy to me Ang. I usually receive calls for siding, PDL loans (lolol!!), Visa, Mastercard, landshare, etc., IF I can get their number, I report it to the Do Not Call registry, that usually stops it. Not always, but sometimes. :)
