So I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I was contacted by a debt collector claiming that I owe a company some money. I never opened an account with these people so I'm obviously the victim of identity fraud. The company/collection agency has my address (and old address!), credit card, bank account info but not my SSN. I keep telling them that I never dealt with them but I doubt that they believe me. I filed a police report and shut down my credit card but I don't have any hard evidence to prove that this wasn't me that racked up a $500 tab. Is there anything that these guys can do to take my money? Can they lower my credit score? I'm afraid that I'm going to get screwed over this. I'm guessing that someone close to me found my bank info or someone went through my trash but there's no way that I can prove this. Seeing as my SSN is a secret, does that mean that I'm safe???

What is the name of the collection agency that contacted you, and the name of the original creditor? And the 'old address' that they have... How old is it? I almost wonder if this isn't a case where the CA bought an old debt portfolio and/or got your info confused into another record. Both have been known to happen.

Regardless, you need to demand validation of the debt from the CA. Also watch your credit reports. If this shows up there' dispute it.

There'll be some more knowledgeable folks along in a bit with more info for ya, so hang on.

they actually have two addresses; one from a year ago, and one from 3 years ago. I didn't recognize the name of the agency but I did speak with one guy on the phone. He was really nice and gave me a few tips but I'm worried because this looks very suspicious on my part. I did demand validation of the debt and I haven't gotten anything yet. Thanks for your help.
