Have your son send them a request for debt validation. Click on the ???????Do it yourself??????? link above and some were in there you????????d find examples of letters. Be sure to have him send it certified mail requesting a signed receipt.
He needs to make them prove that the Debt is owed.
He should check his credit report to see if anything has been reported.

Usually, T-Mobiles collection agencies won't produce requested validation, but they usually don't report either. Requesting validation usually triggers an account to be sent to another agency. after the third agency they send it to a Lawyer, who either does not produce validation, or produces incomplete validation. In may case, even though they didn't produce proper validation, I offered a payment plan , they didn't respond, and sent it off to another lawyer. for those who would say why didn't I just pay as I had proposed, When an account passes into closed or collections status, I do not make any payment until I have in writing what is being paid, how much and for how long.
T-mobile collection agencies
t-mobile account was closed in 2002. 7 years later on 2/29/09 collection notice comes in the mail saying I owe $980.00 for t-mobile acc. Ignored the letter, because account has been paid and closed for 7 years, thinking it's a scam, someone is trying to get money out of me that I don't owe.
A month later it showed up on my credit report!!!!
T-mobile companies are reporting to beauraus and ruining your credits! watch out! looks like they're going through their old closed accounts and selling them to collection agencies. Don't know what I'm going to do, it is such BS. Tough economic times, they're doing unethical things.

I am dealing with the same situation. T-moble reported me to the credit bureau(Transunion) I never had t-moble in my life. i sent a letter for them to verify my debt, i never heard from them after 2 months i called them they asked me to fax my ssn card and my driver's license. i called them 2 days after i was told that i could verify my address so the account belong to me but i know for a fact i never have a t-mobile account with them. I wrote Transunion, and transunion removed the account from my credit report. a week later i checked my credit now tmoble place the same account under experian.

account?? I was a paying customer with T-Mobile for more than 4 years. I
moved out of the Minneapolis area and into Illinois, which at the time,
didn't have decent coverage in all parts of the state for T-Mobile (most
people have AT&T that I know personally). I ended the contract and had to
pay a fee for breaking it. I gave them my new address before I moved, and
did the usual deal with a change of address through the USPS. I received a forwarded (and 2 months old) notice from T-Mobile that they were sending my debt (remaining balance and termination fee) to a debt collection agency- but at that time, the notice was still from T-Mobile, not a collection agent. I called them immediately, changing my address AGAIN over the phone, only to have them tell me they had never canceled my account at my request, but due to overdue payment. I offered to pay the whole of the balance and they told me I would have to go to their collection agent as they no longer held the information, the agency did. I called the number the person at T-Mobile gave me and the agency said they were no longer in charge of my account and T-Mobile had moved it to another agency since they were unable to get ahold of me to collect. The person at the agency told me I'd have to call T-mobile to find out where. I called T-mobile again, and was told I would surely receive notices from the debt collector. It has now been FOUR YEARS and I still don't know who has the debt that I shouldn't have had in the first place or how much it is now! I have called T-Mobile multiple times and sent it in writing, always getting the response that I can no longer pay them directly and that I should receive notice from the agency in charge of the debt collection. The absurdity of how bad this I'm sure, has destroyed my poor little student credit rating gives me nightmares. Is there anyway to figure out how much I owe and to whom I'm supposed to pay it? Even a list of creditors dealing with T-Mobile accounts that I can call one and by one??

Check your credit report. If it is listed, then you will have that company's contact information. Then you can send a debt validation letter to that company. This helps you in that you can get exactly how much you owe and to whom you will need to pay it. Also you can negotiate to get it removed from your credit report (called a pay for delete).
If they give you the run around this time, you can then dispute it through the reporting agency and get it removed. It may take some work and it may take a few 'intent to sue' letters....but really...if they can't provide you with the proper documentation then they have to remove it.

Ouch when was the last time you made a payment? I doubt this debt is time barred, meaning the statute of limitations has passed. For open accounts, like credit cars, it is 4 years in IL. I don't think this falls under that. It would either be a written contract, 10 years ouch, or under the sales UCC laws, which is a better 4 years.
You should contact a consumer attorney at NACA.net in your state to see what SOL applies. If the debt is in fact time barred, I would not pay a dime on it.

thanks for the help. I went through my credit report (as I try to do annually) and no luck. at least currently, it isn't even listed in the "in poor standing" section which I guess is a good thing. except....it isn't even listed at all.

Received 3 calls. Two hung up when told I was not here, one asked me about a T-Mobile balance. I have never had a T-Mobile account. Called EOS-CCA and they couldn't find me in their records. Anyone else? Any idea who's calling?

hi, I was just wondering if you have found out anything yet? I was with tmobile, Have a cancelled account and balance of $405, I called tmobile and they said I would receive a collections letter, I did, And I called the agency and like your case, they told me that tmobile had taken it back because I had disputed it (i had not). So I call tmobile again and they say its still in collections and they give me the number they have, When i called that number it opened tmobiles prepaid account line (im on that plan now) after yelling at customer service when they wouldnt believe me that I didnt have a pin number (with contract they use last 4 of ssn) they transferred me back and forth until I finally lost it and told them where to go.
I just spoke to them through the online chat service and they told me it has now gone to voice stream in house agency, im guessing thats who they were trying to connect me to but because I called from a tmobile prepaid it immediately went to normal account line.
So anyway I havent called that number yet and I havent recieved any letter, But the first agency added $100 service charge to the amount and now that amount has been included in the final amount, even though I am not using that agency.
Why should I have to pay more because T-mobile changed their mind on which agency to use?
Tmobile Collection Agency
I was wondering if anyone knows who the collection agency is for tmobile. I had an account with them that was cancelled. They are saying I owe a bunch of fee's. Their collection agency calls me 3-4 times a day and when I answered to make arrangements to pay they arent willing to make arrangements, they harrass me and belittle me and refuse to tell me the name of the agency they work for. I know for a fact they are violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and I need to have something done about this. Does anyone know which agency they generally go through?
Check your credit report, if the collection agency has listed it
Check your credit report, if the collection agency has listed it there you can get the name and addy from there. If they call you, simply tell them to send you a letter and then hang up. They have 5 days to send you a letter from the initial phone contact.
