They are say they need: the specific information being disputed, the basis for the dispute and any supporting documents.
What do I do next?
Are they just wasting time? Shouldn't they have validated the debt with the information provided?

Did you give them the original creditor, the amount they are trying to collect and the account number? That should be sufficient. If thet are trying to collect from you they must know why they are. Unbelievable. Send them a failure to validate letter. I think they are blowing smoke. It is up to them to provide documentation not you.

The DV Letter I sent had the account number from my CR.
The letter they sent me included: their account number, OC account number, name of OC, amount owed.
Obviously they have the account information. That is why I think they are just wasting time.

Ok.
Does anyone have an example of a failure to validate letter?
Should I include a statement that the information I provided was obviously enough to access the account and therefore should have been validated?

That is exactly what you should say! I would also tell them a copy of their response to validate is being forwarded to the FTC. Who are they?

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is being sent to you in response to your letter dated December 12, 2007 stating ???????failure to provide sufficient information??????? on my part.
Obviously sufficient information has been provided to your company, as your letter shows that you were able to locate my account and obtain the original creditor, the original creditor????????s account number, your own account number and the amount you say I owe. A copy of your letter has been attached for your convenience.
I consider this reply to be a failure, or refusal, to validate.
I will be sending a copy of my original debt validation letter, your reply letter and this letter to the Federal Trade Commission and the three credit reporting agencies.
Sounds good to me, are you going to send it to the cb's

Just keep it going, provided you're acting in good faith. After a few rounds, they'll mark the debt uncollectible and move on to the next victim.
Yeah, they are blowing smoke. Watch for them trying to say you
Yeah, they are blowing smoke. Watch for them trying to say you -must- send a copy of your drivers license and social security card. I had one do that and I called to ask why and inform them that I was not going to do so, nor did law require it. They actually had the audacity to tell me they would compare the signature to the signature on the paperwork. I responded with, "Oh, so you have something with a signature? Great! Just send me a copy of that as is required by law." The lady just sputtered and tried to tell me they did not have to send anything. What a bunch of losers.

hummmm maybe one of the more legal minds here could shed some light, but it seems to me they could read from your letter that they indeed provided adequate information to support validation.. Be careful.
