double collections

i got a collections notice for a very old verizon bill that was referred to palisades collections. i paid it a year ago, and now i am getting stuff from an nco group for an unpaid bill from at&t (never had at&t, but it was for the same address). has anyone else had their account sent to multiple collections for the same bill? i haven't yet got anything on my credit but an inquiry, but i don't feel i should even have that since it already paid it. how do i handle this? i would have just paid it (it's only 59 bucks) but it's so old (2002) I feel like it would be better not to. i'm not sure how to deal with this. if it is actually a separate bill, if i pay it, will i re-age it?

Sounds like the original CA sold the debt to another CA without mentioning the bothersome fact that you'd paid it.FWIW, Pallisades and NCO are both scum.
Send them a letter demanding that they validate the debt completely. Sample DV letters are available on this site.
