I am not personally familiar with them but here is what Texas consumer advocate Bud Hibbs has to say about them:
portfolio recovery associates, (PRA) bottom feeders with deep pockets, have apparently figured out how to get blood from a turnip. Boasting a strong bottom line and profits at around $36.5 million for 2005 (2006 due in Feb), things aren????????t too bad for these junk debt buyers, for now.
The turnip blood appears to be flowing from portfolios they collect on that date back in to the 90????????s-- we????????re talking accounts so out of statute that most consumers can????????t even remember if they even existed.
The have their $8-12/hr. collectors calling off those God-awful automated telephone machines (email the brass, above if you want your name removed) and managers working there for about $35-40k/year according to job sites we visited.
A bottom feeder is a bottom feeder and make no mistake, these vultures live off the grief and (in some cases) the time barred debts of unsophisticated consumers. Like most of the bottom feeders out there, PRA and Anchor are fighting the density of junk debt buyers who have flooded the market. To say the price for accounts has gone up is an under-statement. PRA is paying more just like everyone else to stay on top of the market.
The bigger problem they and others like them will be facing in 2007 is when Wall Street realizes this industry has already seen its best days. The Bankruptcy Reform Act and increased minimum payments has spawned an attitude among consumers to keep those credit card accounts under control.
Organizations like the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) see: www.naca.net has grown into an army of attorneys who assist consumers in litigation. The credit bureaus will soon face the growing wrath of consumers in the manner they allow information to be gathered, sold and reported by these junk debt buyers and Congress may just be listening.

Seeing as how your only assets are your clothes and your SSI they can't really sue you for anything as SSI is not a attachable source of income (meaning they cannot garnish it. If you can afford to make payments on it be sure you get everything in writing first and if you make payments pay them by money order, never disclose your bank account information to them.

I called on an old cell phone bill (US CELL) and they directed me to Portfolio Recovery Assoc. and gave me the humber. Wanting to settle up any debts that I have owed I called them and dummy me gave them ALL of my information, including my BF's phone number. They offered me a "settlement" of half the "original" bill. They told me that they can't deal with the bank consolidator that I am going to be working with. I arranged payment from my checking account to be automatically withdrawn at the end of the month to start paying this bill back. They told me that I would have 3 months to pay it off under those terms OR I could do a twelve month agreement on the "original" bill. What do I do?? I was wondering about them so I looked up their name on the internet and all I have seen is negative stuff on them. My bill is from 2001......I think the SOL here is 7 years......did I just screw myself by contacting them and wanting to be honest????

I just wanted to post a compliment for this company. I had a very old debt and they called me and very kindly helped me to pay it. I believe in paying debts I made no matter how long ago they were made. The two women who helped me Tangi B. and Velisa C. were so kind and patient with me. This was my first experience with bill collectors that made me feel respected. I think there are very considerate people working for Porfolio Recovery Associates.

Thee are some decent collectors out there. I read about one in Rod Serlings Twilight Zone once! Just kidding! There are some that will fire an employee if they violate the FDCPA. Unfortunately there are so many bad ones that they give the industry a bad name.

tigger ~ no do not call PRA - yes it is "real" if you can call it that. everything needs to be done in writing. this is what i would do if your objective is to get it off the report...
since PRA has updated your report last month chances are high that they will start calling and sending you letters. then you can WRITE cm rr and send a VOD letter. PRA does not have a reputation of validating or suing. however, stay humble, write the letter, and then get it removed with the CRAs.

What does "then you can WRITE cm rr and send a VOD letter. " mean in English? They have something on my report and I don't even know what it is.

My husband has been hounded daily at work and at home on a bill from 2004. Now knowing that they cannot collect on this since it is 16 years old, he told them many many times he was not going to pay it and stop calling, they are relentless, they have even called on a Sunday trying to collect this old debt. They told him if he refuses to pay, they will put it on his credit report, one person said they already did, which is not true, he has purchased 2 new vehicles and a house since 2004 and it was not on his credit. They are ruthless and do not give up. What can you do to get them to stop calling?

I wanted to thank the person who posted the number to Portfolio Recovery Assco., Could not find an address anywhere. I called the number that was posted and finally got their address. I had spoke to a very rude person who called about my credit card debt. Next thing I know they sent in the mail, an appointment to be in court, they was sueing me. I decided to go bankruptcy chapter 7, after talking to my lawyer . And I agree, they are bottom feeders, this was the debt my ex-husband left me with. My ex withheld the bills for the credit card, during the divorce and used my credit card. And the way the divorce papers was written I couldn't get the money from him for the debt. He really stuck me.
