Anyone deal with a collector that forges Caller ID?

That's called caller ID spoofing and currently is legal (though some debate is now going on about it). Anyone can get a caller ID spoof card online for about $10. It's most commonly used as you described.

It is legal to a degree.They are not allowed to assume another person's name,only a company or dba.Most of them just block caller id.Please refer to the Federal Communications Commission for the rules.

Wouldn????????t this technically be deceptive? I thought CAs couldn????????t be deceptive. Personally I think they shouldn????????t be allowed to use caller ID blocker, since half the time it????????s like pulling teeth getting them to give you any sort of address or whatnot.

Cajun is right, I meant to say that spoofing in general is legal last I checked.

Problem is, as we all know by now, that a great many CAs are deceptive by nature. Spoofing caller ID is pretty simple with conventional phone systems. With VoIP phones [Cisco, Vonage, etc.] it becomes even easier. No card required, just alter a couple of settings and go.

I'm normally the last person to advocate more governmental regulation. But in this case, I'm willing to make an exception. Blocking caller ID should be legal. Spoofing it so as to appear as something you're not, should not.

Does anyone know the names of any companies that they know do this? They are collecting on a 4 year old repo from Ford Credit.

heck..I think it was here I heard that one CA's caller ID was saying they are Jesus Christ :)

Personally, I don't understand why we even have caller ID anymore...with call ID block..what is the point?:):P

Goldenblast the point is if a caller does not identify themselves through my caller id,they speak to my machine.

Jesus Christ? Now that really is deceptive! It probably should have read "Satan - Prince of Darkness."

But I agree with Bast, I could have sworn I heard something, at some time or another, that CA's were required by law to have their CORRECT company name and phone number appear in the caller ID. I may be confused but I was almost certain I had. Problem is, how are you going to prove it when they call and caller ID reads "Out of Area" or "Unknown Caller?"

But I do like Cajun does and if I don't recognize the number or it is blocked, straight to voicemail.

I can recall one CA not too long back, they would call my house and my name and phone number would show up on the caller ID. Personally, I dont see how that is legal--if I remember correctly the fdcpa prohibits any 3rd party collector from claiming to be any entity that they are not. To me, this could be argued that by listing another company's name, telephone number, or the name of a private person, they are using deception to make you think that they are not who they really are. I just do not see how that can be considered legal.
