You can try, I'd dispute it first as "not mine" with the credit reporting agencies, if they verify it I'd send a DV letter (demand for validation) to whomever the collection agency (CA) is.

If it is yours and you have the money, you should call who ever is collecting it and make arrangements to pay it. Since it has already hurt your credit, it does not hurt to try to get the creditor or collection agency to take less than the amount owed. If you come to a settlement agreement, get it in writing before you pay.
what then?
Once you pay a credit agency a settlement, how does that change the "charge off" the original creditor has listed on your credit report?
