hello queenbee!! these collection agencies are always a pain in the neck. From what i gathered on the internet, midland works in San Diego, California, Phoenix and some other places. however it is tough for me to say whether they are authorized or not. you never know what kind of people they are and if your sister is really behind her payments then one fine morning she may wake up to find court summons on her breakfast table! my suggestion is correspond with them through certified letters. in this way you will have proof that you are trying to settle the matter and they wont have any evidence that your sister is trying to run away with their money.

hi every one! i am new here and as soon as i visited the forum i came across queenbee's problem. laurel is right- a pain in the neck- that's what they are. my suggestion is instead of ignoring them altogether, tell your sister to have a frank discussion on what are the options they are giving her. as she is a student, chances are that they may be a bit more considerate. she may also ask her relatives to donate for her if they can and she can pay them later. relatives are better than collection agencies :) . it will be a good idea to pay them off before the debt amount increases by late fee charges, interests etc, as it will become all the more difficult for her to pay up. all the best!
