I'm guessing this is the same bozo that's angling for a tip on the other thread.

The best thing that ever happened to me was to be sternly treated by collection agent. By giving me "tough love" and forcing me to meet my obligations, I gathered a whole new perspective and have become happy with my life. |
If by "tough love" you mean breaking the law (The fdcpa) by threatening to come to my job to "take care of me", or have the police show up to march me out, or trying to make me believe you are an attorney or with law enforcement, by being verbally abusive to me, belittling me,extorting money from someone that doesn't have it, driving someone to commit suicide, . . . .well, you get the point.
You keep telling yourself whatever it takes to make you sleep more soundly at night.

Personally I think Debtfree is from a cult. Do you also try selling flowers on a street corner and all follow the teachings of the CA???
Why does everyone assume "tough love" means breaking the law?

Granted I think that the first post in this thread is a joke but that's really because of the name they chose and deciding to post as a guest and also not offering up more information.
But really until we are told that something was done wrong immediatly jumping the gun and assuming something was done wrong just sews paranoia and discord. I think we have some great people here who do offer a lot of helpful information but I can tell ya that there are very few I would want to see on jury duty.
I certainly agree that there are some rule breaking collectors and agencies but I don't immediatly assume something is wrong until I'm told there is.

I have run across some decent CA's that are not demeaning, but are helpful and honest and do not break the law. Heck, I have one I am dealing with now that is so nice and pleasant that I am having a tough time writing up a letter pointing out that they are not carrying a bond in my state so can not collect. They took my DV request serious and over the phone to boot! We found some errors and they are checking into it. I must say so far this is really the only CA that has not been rude or condecending at all.
Unfortunately, they are few and far between. Just yesturday I had a rude CA try to tell me and I quote: "We don't have to prove you owe the debt, you have to prove you don't." then went on to demand a whole slew of rediculous stuff. I simply asked him if he ever even heard of the FCRA and fdcpa?
Heck, when they call I respond that I will be sending a debt validation letter and almost all of them ask what do I mean by 'validation', and when I explain, they ask me why I want it!!! Makes me not very trusting of the collection trade at all.
Sorry I Do Not Agree
I have to say, all of the CA's I have dealt with so far (I'm not sure of the actual number) have broken the fdcpa with me at least once. I don't think I can name a single one that has kept to the letter of the law while attempting to collect on my debts. I know there have to be some decent and professional ones out there, I'm just hard pressed to name one.
As for the points made in the original post? I'm sorry, a CA is there to collect on a debt professionally and legally. Not offer me "tough love", to treat me sternly, and force me to face my obligations. If I need help like that, I'll go see a therapist or watch an episode of Dr. Phil. I do not need an unprofessional CA calling me and treating me like I'm a child. I'm not.
