Just so you know, it is perfectly acceptable to tip your collection agent. Ten to fifteen percent of your monthly bill is appropriate.

Actually when I was collecting, borrowers used to send me cards, flowers and occasionally small gifts. Keep in mind that I worked with my borrowers for at least a year on their student loans, sometimes longer. I got to know them and their families. One time I was out in California visting my sister, another one took me out to lunch. Another worked for Jay Leno and the Tonight Show...she put us on the guest list so we got to sit in the Green Room with Kathy Ireland parents. We had our pictures taken with Leno after the show....

You do catch more flies with honey than with vingegar.

I doubt Soaplady is joking . . . . There are a few decent collectors out there, and I could see how if you work with someone for so long you would want to thank them for being patient with you, etc.

Not to say I think tipping collectors is right . . . . Just saying Soaplady is/was not the typical collector.

Paul, why would she be kidding? She was obviously a collector who obeyed the law and also worked with people. I don't hate all collectors because of the bad ones, if you think about a good collector could help you out.

I believe most debtors want to pay their bills or are at least willing to if treated with respect and have the means to pay them. Heck, I have 3 small CO's on my credit report, right around $500 total, no phone calls, they are not actively collecting them, I am not looking to buy anything soon where they are going to effect me but I will have them paid in the next few months. Of course I will try a Pay for Delete though.

WELL, MAYBE I AM A BIT TOO ON EDGE WHEN A SUBJECT LIKE THIS COMES UP. IT'S JUST THAT NO COLLECTOR OR CA HAS SHOWN ONE BIT OF A HUMAN SIDE. IF GOUDAH VOUCHES FOR HER THEN I APOLOGIZE SOAP LADY.

I am definately NOT joking. When I was collecting in the 90,'s it was a blast . I worked for an agency that trained us well and paid us well . Break the law and you were out the door . I worked with my borrowers as to what they could do . I educated my borrowers and in several cases helped my borrowers write "intent to sue" letters against other agencies that broke the law. I consolidated, rehabbed and helped my borrowers get out of default.

Wait! Isn't a tip supposed to be for good service? Not just something you're supposed to give regardless?

If that's the case, then some of the CA's and collectors I've had to deal with are due squat! As a matter of fact, they should pay me for having to endure their foolishness.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Many, many years ago, probably 20 or so I had a local collector who was very nice, never rude or pushy, always understanding. She actually made me feel like I wanted to pay her. And guess what? I did pay her. It took some time but I got my bill paid. I never sent her a tip or chocolates though.

Sounds like Soaplady was like this when she was a collector.

There is a CA in my city that deals with medical bills, they are really nice and do everything within reason to work WITH you in order to get accounts settled. Very nice and professional people. So I don't doubt that there are other good agencies out there. They are the ones you never hear about unless you have a account with them.

Our agency made a point to get those nice letters and cards to the staff and management Really good ones were read outloud at the weekly floorwide meeting. Dealing with California accounts, we got a lot of celebraties and people who worked at studios. One guy in my area was send 3 hand drawn cells from a Simpsons episode, I got Jay Leno's autograph, plus an autograph from one of the cast members of the Waltons. Another got ABC promotion products, another got Disney Pins. We had fun displaying our prizes!!

However, cash was a big no no. Since we all worked under AKA's we probably woudnt be able to cash the anyways!

why would you have aka's...too me that is just crazy if you do work with people within the legalalities within the laws why wouldn't you give out your real name, I mean after all you have the individuals name and all pertient personal informaiton and expect them to be upfront and honest with you..don't they deserve the same?

LadyBug, I'm pretty sure CA's use aliases for their protection. Think about it, if some unstable debtor snapped and had a collector's real name, I shudder to think what might happen.

When i worked at a bank, in a call center, we got bomb threats on a monthly basis. Hate to say but it was kind of fun when it happened, time away from the phones and it usually took a few hours until the sounded the "all's clear." Of course not if it was winter though, too cold to stand outside from hours.

I'm just thankful and bomb was never found or did go off.

I don't know if some of you remember the GMAC incident that occurred here in Jacksonville. I think it was about 1991 or so; certainly the early 90's though. A guy snapped because GMAC was threatening to have his care repo-ed and he went into the local GMAC office here in Jacksonville and went on a shooting spree.

Tragic.

I agree with Ron. However some states have actually thought of this. As you may know I am working on a listing of state debt collection laws and I have come across one or two who actually have laws making a CA register all aliases with the state. Now that is smart. So the CA is protected, but can still be held liable for their actions. All states should do this.

Having fought (and am still fighting) my battles with collectors, I find this to be both hilarious and infuriating! No collector is ever on the side of the hapless debtor..NEVER! So, the only tip I would ever give any collector is the one that would send him/her/it over the side of a very tall building.

P.S. Love the shark reference...most appropriate.
