If you are really struggling at the moment, you should try the DAV, AmVets, Salvation Army--places like that. They have programs where a family can get a donated car to get to work, school, etc.

Did the Drunk Driver have insurance? If so, they are on the hook for it, since he or she is at fault. But you really need to look into getting some sort of insurance anyway, since it's a state law in CA.
Dui Penalties may just come in handy!
My friend,
Penalties for DUI are always there to help you out!
Still I'd like to mention over here that the minimum liability one has to maintain in California for covering any property damage is worth $5,000. So, I'm sure you'd be entitled to receive a fair share from the party at-fault.
California being a tort state, you may sue him for causing this damage. The DMV may wish to cancel his driver's license within 4 months (first offense in connection with blood alcohol above 0.08%) till 3 years (third or more offense depicting chemical test refusal) in connection with his drunk driving arrest.
I just want you to know whether you may rent a car (at his expense) till your claim gets compensated. I have one interesting page showing up the DUI penalties for the At-fault party--> southern-california-dui-defense.com/dui_penalties.html
Anyways, I'd like you to call on the California DOI in case you wanna get confirmed of the same in your case.
