As a start, you might investigate the free credit counseling that is available through this site. I have not used it myself. But I have heard good things about it, from people I trust.

Your definately doing the right thing by trying to help your mother out! You should try to call them when she is available to give you permission to speak on her behalf. Maybe you could negotiate how much needs to be paid to close the account. best of luck.
