? about filing Chapter 7

I am recently separated & my ex ruined by credit. I have at least $20k in debt but I make about $63K but with the cost of living, rent, car payment, insurance, dr co-pays for my minor son. & let's not forget utilities & food I have just enough to get by. My question is after a severe bout of depression I just let all the credit cards go & have no idea who I owe or how much. I recently moved & left no forwarding address. I'm doing much better & seeing a DR & I really want to get on with my life & never have a credit card in my life. My question is how can I find out who I owe to ? Then can I find a lawyer online for Chapter 7 ? I'm also terrified they'll take everything. I have 2 TV, computer, furniture, not too jewelry but lots of toys for my son. This whole experience seems so humiliating. Help ! :oops: :cry:


You could start with checking your credit report. If you are in default (and presumably you are based on what you have said here) there will most likely be a list of creditors you owe on your credit report. You may also need to contact your ex to retrieve any correspondence you left behind or are still receiving at your old address. You will need all this information if you should decide to go in to see an Attorney about filing BK. Also, if you are in the U.S., BK is based on income now, you have to qualify and be within certain income ranges in order to file, so you might want to keep that in mind also. There are other alternatives besides BK, I hope you will look into them before making your final decision. Good luck. :)
