I live in Illinois, I got a call from a collection agency about 3 old tickets that I have from 2001. They total less than $500. I had been getting calls with a message telling me ta call back some number. When I caalled the lady told me that I was going to have my license suspended because I owe over $2000 in parking fines. She told me that we could settle. Well, I told the lady that I didn't know what she was talking about. I did in fact pay the city HALF of what they wanted and I didnt pay the fines because I thought the were unjust (i know I cant do that) so the lady asks if the number I am calling from is the number they contacted me at, I said yes. She then goes on to say that my account is not showing up so she asks me my name. I gave it to her and she said yup I have ALOT of tickets over $2,000 and that my license would be suspended. She asked did i want to talk to a manager about payment arrangements. I said I wanted to speak to the manager. She said she would call back. Now, at this point I told my coworker and he told me that this is a tactic to put the debt back on my credit since my SOL was about to end and that it would be dropping off my report. He told me by talking to them I may have "renewed" the mark on my credit. He saaid it has happened to him, but it was from a different state. Well, the woman called back and said she talked to the manager and that he gave the okay for me TO MAKE AN OFFER on the debt, and that they would take the payment over the phone. I told her that I was sure I paid my tickets, she said I would need proof. I told her that I could digg it up. She said I should settle now, and I told her that I really dont know what she was talking about and to send me a bill before I arrange to pay anything. She then asked for my address because it isnt included in the file. I told her that if she doesnt have my address then it must not be my tickets because they CLEARLY know my address, I got stuff in the mail in 2001. I told her I would have to look into this and contact them. So, I do not mind paying the debt but I Do Not want it on my credit report. Did my talking to her renew this on my credit report? Since I did not make payment arrangements am I protected? They may still lie because I found that my license can only be suspended if I have 10 tickets, and I called the issuing suburb and they told me the amount was $470. I need sound advice on how to go about settling this debt and not having it reappear on my credit for another seven years.

I do not think that talking to anyone locked you into any debt..guest get validation FIRST!!!! demand and get this info and then proceed..good grief don't be afraid that simply talking to someone put you further in debt...it has to be proven on paper..(many people record these conversations with ca's with no consent because people on site have seen that all these Collection companies record all conversations they have with you whether legal or not)..please get proper validation before proceeding!!!! and

Call the CA.
Ask for, and write down every ticket number they are collecting (find out if they collect for multiple jurisdictions).
Verify with issuing department each ticket number.
If CA is collecting tickets that are not yours, send a written letter of dispute.

Also, talking on the phone does not change credit reporting. If this happened to your co-worker, he/she needs to file a dispute with the credit bureau's as obsolete.

this must be get screwed by the state month! I too had some parking tickets from like 4/01 and I had paid them ($5)each and here it is now 2008 moved 3 times since then, thrown away all paperwork back in 2005 regarding anything prior to that year, and now the city is requesting my state income tax check be garnished to pay 560 bucks they say I owe..

and with out proof from almost 8yrs ago, that I paid them, there is nothing I can do. I called the state, they say take it up with the city , and the city will not back down, it is basically show proof, and I was like I paid 5 bucks per ticket (10 tickets) and that was that... I didnt know I was suppose to haul every piece of paper for every payment I have made in my life around for my life.
what a joke.
thanks for letting me vent.

moral... keep everything. pass it to your kids, so they dont have to pay too, then they can pass your stuff and their stuff to their kids.. and so on..........LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, it seems really odd to me that someone would be calling about tickets you got 7 years ago and claiming that your license would be suspended NOW, 7 years later. If they are going to suspend your license, it wont take them 7 years to get around to doing it, I dont care where you live...

The only thing I would do at this point is get an address for this CA and send them a certified letter requesting validation of this debt. By federal law they either must provide it, or they must stop trying to collect the debt. And, before they provide it, they are required by that law to not take any collection activity against you.

As far as your credit report goes, they cannot "re-age" a debt for that purpose in any legal manner. Your credit report isnt the same as a debt SOL--the SOL can be legally restarted, whereas the time limit for reporting to the bureaus cannot. If they change the dates, you will know by looking at your credit report--it will tell you when the account was first opened.

Validation is the next move you need to make. If you tell us the name of the collection agency we can most likely get an address for you, if you need one.
