I have an extremely dysfunctional family and my own father has sued me for the $20,000 he gave me as a gift to buy a new home. Long story short....a judgment was ordered against me for $20,000.00 plus costs. Can my wages be garnished? What other options do I have for repayment?

Your own father?? Well, that's a shame. Anyway, seems to me since he has a judgement against you he could take it further if he wanted and have your wages garnished but I'm not sure about that. Were payment arrangements set up at the time of judgement? I am sure someone else with more knowledge on this subject will be along shortly to advise you.

jennifer-that is awful....it really is. I know this is after that fact but you say this was gift money but was there a contract or a promise to pay agreement that he was able to use against you in court?

He has a judgement against you (which is ludicris) and it really depends on how far he wants to take it.

He can try to garnish your wages, which in a garnishment state, could be around 10-25% but even worse, he can put a lien against the home he helped you buy.
