MY Airman Update

I have gotten to talk to him on the phone about 3 or 4 times now and have gotten some letters from him. He is doing fine, has been pretty busy, as I am sure you can guess.
For the most part he has flown under the radar. He did almost get recycled, meaning he would have had to start all over. Not that he really got in trouble, but his drawer with all his personal stuff in there was not up to par. I know it sounds silly, but they can recycle them for anything. Luckily he did not get recycled. Now when I talk to him or send him a letter, I remind him about keeping his personal drawer straight. LOL
He has about made it to his 50 push up and 50 sit ups. He said he has bulked up a bit. He told me about some of the combinations he puts between 2 pieces of bread to eat because of not having a lot of time for chow. Some of them just sounded gross, but he just said "Mom, they all end up in the same place" I told him that some of them still sounded gross.
He has had his first taste of what we use to call "sea rations" but they are now called MRE's. He said they weren't bad. I thought he had "Warrior Week" this week, but I must have misunderstood because he told me tonight that he starts that tomorrow.
He has finally gotten his dress blues. He said they were at the cleaners right now. He will get them when he gets back at the end of the week.
He is kind of sick right now, but he said he was not going to go to sick call because he didn't want to stay any longer than he has too. He did sound a bit rough, but he said he would make it. He was kind of looking forward to shooting a M16. I guess they has some "mock" guns, is what he called them, where he learned to take them apart and put them back together. He said he can do it in less than a minute. I was impressed. LOL
He also has a female Drill Sgt. He said when they are in the barrack just BS-ing, he said she was pretty cool, but as soon as they walk out the door, well it is a whole different ball game. He said he thinks in one way she is tougher than the male Drill Sgts.
Kyle wears glasses for distance and with that, he has to wear them all the time in basic. He said he got some brown plastic ones. He said he looks like Forrest Gump right now... then proceeded to tell me "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get". He is such a ****!!!!
All in all, he is doing well. He said he could not wait to see me next month when I get there. He did get to talk to his sister tonight. Last week when he called she was sick in bed sleeping, so she didn't get to talk to him. He told me how much he missed me and he loved me and it took everything I had not to start crying at that point. I did cry when I hung up the phone though. I know he can take care of himself, but being mom, I just wanted to take care of him while he was sick. Hated hearing him cough and sound stuffy.
You better believe I am counting down the days until I go see him. I leave March 12th after I get off work and he graduates the 14th, but I will get to see him on Thurs. I can't wait!!!
I just wanted to let you all know how he is doing. He is still home sick and I know we miss him like crazy. Went to the museum of Natural Sciences and saw the dinosaur exhibit and my daughter made a comment that it would have been more fun if Kyle had been there. Made me a little sad. I will keep you posted on news as I get it.

hiya Karen--
wow, did your post bring back memories! I was in the Navy from 91 to 96 so I am certain that some things have changed since then.
The eyeglasses you referred to are commonly called BCD's--Birth Control Devices....because they were so ugly that no woman would want to talk to you when you had them on. Regs require that anyone who needs glasses wears those while in boot camp, but you can wear your own glasses after that, at least you used to be able to when I was in.
Ah, yes, the MRE's. I actually didnt mind these, although MRE became known by the troops as "meals rejected by ethiopians" or "meals rejected by everyone". Most sailors didnt mess with field rations like that but I was with spec ops so we got used to those. Still, nothing beats the chocolate brownies they used to put in the old K-rations...the best!
Its great that you got to talk to him that many times on the phone. After that first call, I remember getting only one other phone call the whole time I was in basic. I am glad to hear that he's doing so well. I wouldnt get too worried about him sounding a bit rough--he was just thrown into a whole new world. It is supposed to be rough there. Actually, it is rougher in boot camp in many ways than it is once you are past basic. They do this so that they know youre gonna make it--if you can survive boot camp, then the regular service life should be fine. In boot camp he will get a maximum of 6 hours sleep per night. he will be far busier than he is most likely used to. And it is a major shock to your system to take in that much change at once. I was in really good shape out of high school, being in school sports and all, but when I left basic I was actually leaner than when I got there.
Youre doing so well--keep that chin up! The days coming and before you know it, youll be standing there looking at your son in his blues. Be sure to take lots of pictures for us too. Oh, and next time you talk to him, let him know that we're all pulling for him and that Jon from this place wants you to thank him for me.
2nBand...I am so glad he is doing so well!!! And you are too....

I am so glad you have gotten to talk with him!! What a proud mamma you must be!
It is hard when your kids are away and sick. When my son moved to N.C., when he was 20, he got really sick and had to go to hospital--made me crazy I couldn't be there. Your son will be fine, and so will you!!
Both of you are in my prayers.Karen :D

I am trying to hang in there. Still working on the money situation though. My mom did get the room booked, so that helps for right now. Still have to get a car and make sure I have enough money for eats and whatever else he may have planned. He said he has been trying to check to see what kinds of things we can do on base and then see what we can do the day he has his town pass. I have posted a few things on craigslist that I found to get rid of, but just don't have much considering I have already donated practically everything!
It would have been nice if we would be able to get our taxes, but one of our W-2's got lost in the mail, we think, so are having to wait for it to show up, which means we probably won't have the money by the time I leave.

2n--my debtcc points are yours if it will help, seriously. It's only 7651 points, but if it will get you to see his pass in review, please say the word and I will gladly shoot them your way!
