You can check the out on the BBB bureau site and see if there is any informatin there. I think that would be the place to start. I have not heard from them, and like you, I do get leary of people. But start with the BBB and see what they have to say.

Don't be stress. You are not the only one in America especially at this time in our economy that is in debt. If the credit cards company is not willing to work with you and your budget, don't look any sleep on it. They going to write it off anyway. Just make sure you communicate with them in writing that you want to repay your debt but just need assistance and time.
New Era Debt
I completely understand your concern. The way I look at it is, Can a professional company do a better job than I? If so what do I look fo rto find the correct company. I look for trusted sources, like consumer advocates. Gerri Detweiler is a great consumer advocate that tell it how it is and provides great insight. She has a vidoe on the new era website which I think is great to see and it is very clear. Lastly, I would suggest you look at a PERFORMANCE based company, this way you know they have the same interest as you do.
Good luck and check out the video, Gerri also put out 14 questions to ask a company so you can choose the right company.
thanks
Thanks a lot. Gerri's video is enlightening, and so is the Blog. thanks for pointing me in this direction. I appreciate all of the kind words, and you people are correct. . . . I shouldn't get so stressed about this debt. After all, it could be a LOT worse and I'm sure things will work out okay.
thanks again.

I say go with your feelings............if you are getting a bad vibe about it, step back and think about your options. If I had a dime (inflation from a penny) for every time I did something that I felt was wrong I would be rich. I believe that you should follow your feeling.
Take advantage of the free consultation offered on this site. Read up on what others have done. You may even be able to use the ???????do it your self??????? link above. Just know that you have options.

I trully believe our company is the only trust worthy company out there that actually gets people out of debt with dedication and also cares about your future so this doesnt happen again. I have worked here for 5 years and enjoy the fact that i get to help people everyday for a living.

Always pay a lawyer to look over any contract you are afraid or, or do not fully understand.
Signing with a debt negotiation company often means paying thousands of dollars, over months and years with NO guarantee of positive results.
Always start with free services, government counseling services, your current bank may have free debt advise?
You are wise to be autious, now be careful and ask a professional -- an impartial lawyer for a one-hour fee could SAVE you hundreds more or thousands more in the long run, plus save more stress / grief.

New Era debt solutions has a horrible reputation. They used to be called DTS Financial Group which has a F rating with the BBB. All they did was change their name.

I would stay away from this company.

The BBB IS NOT a good resource. They ARE NOT a goverment run agency. They are individual franchised offices, like MC DONALDS. This is why in some states even the less than ethical companies have "A" ratings. Be careful not to solely rely on the BBB to make your decision. Check out ripoffreport.com/reports/0/001/ripoff0001343.htm for more info on what a rip off the BBB is. To look for a good debt settlement company check out TASCsite.org.
Dodn't trust New Era Debt Solutions
Do not trust this company, they don't know what they are doing. I called them and they don't have accurate info and they contradict themselves. They say they don't take any fees, but charge 3% up front, and 15% more fees are to be paid once you are signed up in their program. They said your credit cards don't have to be late to be in the program, but afterwards they said your credit card accounts have to "age" to get a good offer to negotiate your debt down. I would not trust them unless they give you a straight answer, and explain all your options and consequences. Do a better research, pleeeease, this is your debt and money that are involved in this decision.

The BBB is a Scam in itself. Your dumb if you don't see that
Did you not see my last posting? "The BBB IS NOT a good resource. They ARE NOT a goverment run agency. They are individual franchised offices, like MC DONALDS. This is why in some states even the less than ethical companies have "A" ratings. Be careful not to solely rely on the BBB to make your decision. Check out the BBB on RipOffReport.com website and that will show you not why to trust the BBB. You are ignorant if you think the BBB is the almighty and will probably get ripped off if you rely on it. There was a debt settlement company with 1500 complaints and a satisfactory rating and thousands of people got ripped off because of that.

That was directed at you Mrs. B - no soliciting por favor. BBB shouldn't be the only qualifying factor - look into other factors like affiliations within the industry.
Mimi
By the way Mimi, that is the way debt settlement works. The credit card companies WILL NOT settle when an account is current. Why would they? No one would want to pay their full debt back. If a person is current when entering a program, they are at a better advantage because alot of creditors are settling on accounts that are only a couple months behind. The problem is that people only listen to part of what they are being told.
Not soliciting
Just trying to educate people and prevent people from getting ripped off. I am not soliciting any company. It is a very shady industry, I agree with you on that. But there are a couple of honest companies out there. Just trying to educate people on knowing the difference. Sorry for trying to help out. I wish everyone the best in what they do. Happy new year

I was not soliciting
I am not supporting any company, just trying to educate the public to prevent them from ending up getting ripped off such as many people did with that settlement company in Florida that got shut down. Whatever, I wish everyone the best in their endevors. Happy New Year.

Hey jack,
what ever happened with that debt settlement co you mentioned in your initial post? Did you go through with them, or were you able to find something better?
Deebt Settlement
Too late for me, but
Do not go to a Debt Settlement Company unless you have cash on reserve or can get your hands on a few thousand dollars quickly. The monthly payment you send goes to pay the company fees. None goes to the negotiated settlement You will have to send the settlement payment directly to the creditor.
new era debt solution
they say you pay the 15% fee's when they settle a debt, is that true? does anyone know. Has anyone gone with them and how are they, I was thinking of going with them.
They hurt not help
I like how all the positive things are coming from those people who work there and not clients.

Speaking of knowing what you're talking about . . . READ the con
Speaking of knowing what you're talking about . . . READ the contract. Most people are not familiar with the way money is dealt with; take the time to study and learn. New Era was not contradicting themselves, YOU were not listening. And it IS complicated, particularly since you have probably waited until you are so buried in debt that you are just a little hysterical.
First, the BBB is not a government run agency . . . there are NO government-run agencies that (1) give a rat's ass about your debt; and (2) I trust. It IS a business and they TELL you that. You should never rely solely on ANY one source. That, my friends, is just plain lazy. Everybody is getting PAID for everything they do, therefore, how is it that you believe that RipOffReport.com is not just picking out those that they know about? THAT is not a sole source to be relied on either. However, enough people check BBB that if you have a business, you WANT a good review. BBB does ensure quick response and has options if you are not happy with the result. I had an issue with AT&T that went on for 6 months. I finally went to the BBB and it was cleared up the following week.
Second, creditors also do not care about your debt UNTIL you are in arrears, hence the aging aspect of your debts. Three months makes creditors nervous. DTS/New Era is a business, not a not-for-profit. They have a third-party money handler; you get an account, you watch what happens with your money. You pay New Era a "bounty" so to speak for paying your debts; you have a sign-up fee (your 3% of your total debt); your 15% charge is 15% of what you saved in any given debt; you pay Noteworld for handling your money. New Era makes a percentage on what they save you; Noteworld makes $49/month. I had $42,000 in credit card debt; summing up all payments, i.e., Noteworld, New Era, and the credit cards, New Era saved me $15,000. Not too shabby. With any debt consolodation company, be SURE to get a settlement letter from the creditor. If you do not, you have no way of proving your debt has been paid and they can come back and try to get it again. Further, if you have time to do the negotiation with your credit card companies (or whoever you owe) and have enough money per month to pay everybody every month, fine. Go for it. HOWEVER, if you cannot pay every single creditor every month, whoever is NOT getting paid will file a lawsuit against you. With a debt consolodation company, they should give you NOTICE to send to all of your creditors telling them that you are in debt consolodation and these are the people to contact. New Era also has a division that takes care of those slimy outfits that creditors hire to harrass you to death. There is a legal section of the law that says that this is illegal. New Era gives you the language, you write the letter, send it certified and voila, harassment ends if it ever started.
FURTHER, do NOT just forget about debt. They don't and they won't. The Feds have a relatively new law with the most ridiculous idea behind it I have ever heard. When a credit card company writes off debt, they are now OBLIGATED to file a 1099-C. The idea goes like this: If Citibank couldn't collect $4,000, why and where is that money? YOU have it! The FEDS pressure the credit card companies to pursue that debt. When you make a deal with the credit card company, let's say you've saved $1,500. Citibank is obligated by law to file a 1099-C naming you as the beneficiary of that $1,500. The FEDS in turn look to you for the taxes on that $1,500 - like it's cash in your pocket.
AND New Era is the most responsive company I have ever dealt with in my life. I send an e-mail tonite, I have an answer on Monday morning - or a phone call, whichever I prefer.
I know I'm a might late, but perhaps others will read this and get a little more information on the truth about debt consolodation, the law, and the ramifications. Good luck to one and all!
I'm in exactly the same situation

I just talked to them today. Their fees are high. 3% of the total dept up front, $30 a month for administration fees, and 15% of the amount of the dept when starting for each one they negotiate down.
