I broke my wrist in early January and had to have surgery. I don't have insurance. I received a bill for anesthesia for $450 in February. They wanted payment in full in 20 days. I called to make payment arrangements as I have not worked in almost 3 months. They told me they will only accept $50 a month payments. I can only afford $25. This bill is not even 30 days past due and they are already threatening me with turning it over to a collection agency! My question is should I just send the $25 I can afford? It would be a hardship to send $50. At least its showing I'm trying to make payments. Do you think they will send me to collections since I'm only making $25 payments? Are they obligated to accept the payment? If they don't can I have them make a statement in writing as to why they won't so I can have some kind of proof that I at least offered payment?

I don't think they are obligated to take or make payment arrangements.

My son was in and out of hospitals for years, we always made arrangement. Keep calling and maybe you will get someone who will do this. I have, in the past, sent a letter with a payment, stating that I could pay xx dollars a month, and I would make this payment on xx date. If I had five or ten more dollars, I also sent it to them.

Good Luck..Keep us posted..KAren :D

I agree with Bossy. If they cash your checks, then yes, they do accept payment arrangements--and trust me, they're going to cash your checks! Since you haven't worked for awhile, I would also call your hospital and county to see if there are any programs for low-income residents who need medical care. Good luck to you!
