10k in bad debt, Wife has excellent credit

I currently have about 10K in bad debt (credit cards which I have not paid in 2 years). I just recently got married and my wife has a 750 credit score. We are looking to purchase a house in a couple years and my question is is that even a attainable goal? I plan on paying off all my bad debts within the year or so through settlements. How long will that make me tainted goods and will it affect my wife?
