I was a student and left US 7 years ago without paying off my credit card bills because I was so broke at that time. Now I am thinking to go US again for vacation. Will it be any consequences for entering US again? such as being stopped in immigration checkpoint or being detained?

Thanks guys for all information. I wasn't really think of using up all my credit limit and skip town. In fact, whenever I had money, I paid up partially. If Im not mistaken, my credit card debt that I haven't paid is around usd15,000. If I wanted to use up all the credit and skip town, it will be usd100,000 on my debt now. Hope they will be more response regarding my matter from all of you.

It is -never- a crime. Repeat. NEVER. The only way it could be a crime is if you STOLE someone's identity to get the card in the first place. Even if you ran up a bill with no intention, even from the get go, of paying it, it is not a crime, it is just debt.

On the immigration status, that I have no honest idea, I highly doubt it effects your visa or anything.

Wow, reading these boards and the obvious trolls is quite amusing. all their information is false too. They must really love their jobs *cough* commission *cough*

In answer to your original posting, yes you can enter the country no problem. Heh ICE has more important things to worry about than ones credit/debt. Debt is a civil matter, not criminal. It would be amusing if you're crossing the border and the border patrol agent working the toll booth stopped you and said "hm, looks like you didn't pay that library fine from 6 years ago..sorry you can't enter and you're under arrest."

don't let these trolls fool you, you can't go to jail for a debt.

Thanks so much for all the posts I was wondering the same thing. However mine is slightly different. I am not a US citizen and here on student visa. I owe some outstanding debts at an apartment I use to live at. They have all my visa and immigration info. I want and are planning to go home out of the US soon. You all say there should be no problem entering the country again and there really is no way to track me?
