I've never heard of Certegy, until tonight. I went to K-mart, bought some things, went to write and check to pay for it, and it was declined. Huh? I mean WTH?! I've never had a bounced check, I have over draft protection anyways. I called the toll free number, of course it's automated, they won't give you a reason, the recording just said "Precautionary Measures", sooooo, what the heck is that all about? I cashed a check elsewhere a few minutes later, just fine. Would this have anything to do with having debts in collection? I really can't figure out why they would decline my check. :?

That's a real head scratcher Shazzers. If you have any PDLs outstanding they may have tried to report it as a bounced check. Or they could be trying to pressure you into paying a debt by reporting it as such. Either way sounds pretty illegal to me. I would suggest you do some further research and prepare to fire off a DV letter and possibly file some complaints through proper legal channels.

Evenin' Shazz -

I've been trying to post to your thread for the last ten minutes or so, but the board was having issues. So,,, I threw some $$$ at my SL lender while I was waiting, just to keep'em on their toes....

Anyway... Google Certigy. You'll find lots more than their corporate website. Some of it is fairly unpleasant.

OK, I am NOT a happy camper you guys, I just spoke to a rep at Certegy, this is what I was told. I was told it was a precautionary measure, and there is nothing negative against my checking, it could have been other activity in my area which affected why my check was turned down. HUH????? And to answer your questions, I don't owe anymore PDL's. all paid and settled. I do however have debts in collection which I am trying to deal with, but my checking account is in good standing, I have never had a check returned for NSF. I requested a letter explaining why my check was declined, now I have to wait two weeks to find out the reason. :x

Well folks I received a response from Certegy today, and I am not happy, in fact, I am very disturbed, because basically what they are telling me is, based on statistics, my check was declined at K-Mart.
Here's the letter:

Dear Ms. XXXXX,

This letter is written in response to your inquiry regarding our recent inability to authorize your check. Initially, we want to assure you that we understand the concern this can cause, and we apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

Certegy Check Service (CCS) is a check authorization service. Our clients throughout the United States utilize the service to help reduce losses incurred through retail practice of check acceptance. For many CCS clients we assume liability should an authorized check subsequently be dishonored. CCS maintains a computerized file containing both returned check information and driver's license or checking account number. In addition to this information, over 40 years of check authorization and resulting loss experiences CCS has developed guidelines for authorizing acceptance of checks. Our system determines the potential risks associated with with checks. Many proprietary factors are evaluated and in making decisions for check approvals. We also track check writing based on many factors, including check sequence number,, check writing activity and check amounts. This process is designed to protect consumers and retailers and to prevent unauthorized individuals from writing checks on otherwise valid accounts. Unfortunately, valid check writing patterns can occasionally overlap with these patterns resulting in out inability to authorize a valid check such as yours.

Regarding our inability to authorize your check, although there were no returned checks on file, the check fell outside of approval guidelines. Unfortunately, we did not have any addtional information at the time to override the concern, and we again sincerely apologize.

In closing, we do appreciate and understand your concerns. Please contact our Customer Care Department at 800-352-5970 if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

CERTEGY CHECK SERVICES, INC.
Customer Care Department

I would REALLY like to know what guideline my check didn't meet.

It really is strange, and I've decided I'm going to pursue it, I've been trying to get an email address for the CEO of K-Mart, so far no luck darn it! I'm also going to request a reason why my check didn't meet their guidelines, and what specifically what guidelines they're referring to. :?

I'm not sure if I ever post this or not but I had experience with them also. A few months ago I received a refund from my school. It was the weekend and I didn't feel like waiting on my bank to open. (I think Monday was President Day so I had to wait a few days for it to clear.) I went to my local Walmart to cash this check. I was denied and I called up their 800 number to ask why. I had my problems with pdl places and wanted to see if this was the reason why. They claim that I was not in their system and next time I went to Walmart to cash the check I will be able to. I haven't had to cash a check at Walmart so I'm not sure if it????????s ok or not.
