Have never ran across this before?? Unusal?? Unifund
Date: Wed, 04/09/2008 - 07:08
They start out the notice by advising the following:
This letter is to inform you that Unifund currently owns or is servicing the above referenced account with a balance of $$$$$$
Isn't it a bit unusual that they don't know if they own or have been assigned the debt?
Of course, I plan to request validation, but how should I handle the above?

My notice said the same thing. Request debt validation immediately! I have NEVER received a validation yet, but we are currently in the middle of a law suit, actually discovery. I am curious to see if they will validate during discovery. Good luck with them, and watch your back, they are ruthless! Read about them on Bud Hibbs website. :?
How long did they try to collect before filing suit?

It was approximately 6 months. One thing I have noticed about them is, they continue to charge outrageous amounts of interest. I haven't actually checked into this yet, but according to something I read at this forum, a collection agency has to be a licensed lender in order to continue charging interest per annum (anyone know about this?)?? I'm not really sure, I could have read it wrong, and it could also be wishful thinking on my part, but if it's true, that means that Unifund is unlawfully charging interest, or the wrong amount of interest.
Just be aware of how much money they are trying to collect on, it's a little fishy to me that a balance could accumulate almost $6000.00 in interest , in a years time (on my statement).
6,000 in a year??? How much was the original debt???

The original amount was $11,000.00 (Not quite that but close enough). Pretty high interest, wouldn't you say?
It's a little ridiculous, but that's Unifund for ya. :x

You need to be aware of how this company does things. They are VERY illegal. Then, read that page from top to bottom.
As for the letter you received, there is nothing wrong there--they just use the one letter for both situations--when they own the debt and when they are assigned to collect it by the owner.
