United Cash Loans -- My Story, A Thank You, and Questions
Date: Thu, 04/17/2008 - 10:05
Back in January, I applied for an received a $300 payday loan from United Cash Loans. Unfortunately, it didn't occur to me to see if this place was a scam before doing it.
After finding out they were a scam (and after they refused to let me pay off my loan), I let them debit my account for $360, $90 at a time ($300 for the original balance, $60 being near the max amount they could charge in TX), then put a stop payment on them. I figured I was in the clear at that point.
Boy, was I wrong.
On the 15th, they tried to run a check that I didn't write against my bank account for $435 (what they claim I owe). This is about the only time I am glad I was pretty broke (day before payday), as the check bounced and incurred a $35 NSF fee.
So I called my bank's fraud center, got the charge reversed, and went in today to change my account information. Got a new checking and savings account, the old one was put on deposit only (since it'll take a pay period or two to get my direct deposit from work moved over).
I called the TX Attorney General's office and I'm in the process of filling out a complaint form. It actually needs to go through their office directly, as the OCCC is for complaints against legal, licensed lenders only.
At this point I'm keeping an eye on my credit report to make sure that no collection agencies hit it up and waiting on the results of my complaint to the TX AGs office.
Thank you to this site for turning me on to the fact that this is a scam shop. And my question is, is there anything else I should be doing? Is civil action in small claims a possibility? Should I contact the police to report wire fraud? What advice do you all have from this point?

I'm trying to "shake United Cash Loans from my feet" as well; PDL's are prohibited here in Maryland and I've been working closely w/ our State Financial Commission; United Cash Loans is the last PDL that's bothering me. I don't know if there is a way to collect from them via small claims court, probably someone else more knowledgeable than I can advise you on that. Good to hear you have your bank accounts taken care of so they can't bleed any more money from you, AND that you got the charges reversed, too!

EK, have you filed complaints with the BBB, the FTC, and your state AG regarding the pdl? If not, you need to do so.
