My debt consolidation counselor tried contacting cap one with a proposal, she called me and said that the account number I gave her came up incorrect. This is the only accountnumber I had with them. Does anyone know why that would be incorrect? Thanks

Welcome to the community guest.
I would suggest that you try contacting the original creditor and ask them about the account number if it still belongs to Capital one. If not then you will need to get the account/reference number that the collection agency is using.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

I don't know, except, maybe they charged it off, or outsourced it with a CA.? I called on ours when I was paying them off. They had mine, but couldn't find my husbands, turns out, they had charged it off. But after talking with a supervisor, they did some checking and found it and I payed it.

The first lady I spoke with wouldn't work with me, even when I told her I was paying it off. I kept calling and finally got someone that got a supervisor for me and helped me settle it.

Good Luck..karen,

You could send them a debt validation letter (you can find a good template via my signature link) you can include the account number in the list of items requested. Be sure to send the enclosure with it, certified mail, return receipt requested.

Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act they must cease all collection activity until validation can be provided. This will force them to stop collecting until they give you the information you need. Please be advised that continuing to report to a consumer reporting agency (including credit reporting bureaus) is considered continued collection activity.
