I have a question- please help!

I am in Texas and am currently past due 90 days on a credit card- received call from collection agency last week and if I didn't pay $4400 then I would be sued. Of course this completely shocked me and I stupidly gave them our checking account info to debit out 1/2 of the balance. After calling my husband we decided to close out our checking account so that no money could be drafted. We got noticed from our bank that it was returned to collection agency.

Since I did give them the account info but there is no paper check can they pursue me for giving them a "hot check" on closed account? Please any info would be helpful as they called and left a message today!

Instead of calling them to cancle the check I can almost assure you that they will take it as hostile intentions. Since it's just 90 days old I would assume you can still make a payment to the creditor. If it is owned by the creditor still then the creditor will have the options to sue you to recover the balance and with given how the economy is backsliding it wouldn't suprise me if they did. Try and resolve it with the creditor if you are able and quickly.
