Question about editing posts
Date: Mon, 06/16/2008 - 13:30
Moderators are tasked with keeping the site clean. We are supposed to edit or delete certain posts, right?
I've noticed lately that there are posts being edited because of TOS violations, but the edits are making fun of the original poster. Now, sure, they are funny. But shouldn't we as moderators be held to a higher standard?
I think if we want this site to become better, and gain more membership, it needs to look like a real professional place to get help. When moderators joke around and edit posts to be funny, it takes away from the professionalism of the site. Granted, it may be funny, but really, is it necessary? Wouldn't it look better if it just said "Edited for TOS violation" instead of "Edited because you are a cheesehead"?
I know eveyone wants to have their fun too, but especially at times when we are trying to build up the site and make it better, the moderators need to be leaders and give a good example for others to follow in the forums. Debt is a serious issue, and I know if I was a newcomer, and saw that the people tasked with keeping the site clean weren't acting serious, I'd think it was more of a joke site then a real place for help.

I understand what you mean Goudah. I usually use a format like this:
Deleted/edited for (insert TOS violation here) please refer to the site's TOS. (or something to that effect) Plus I linked the site's TOS to my signature.
Please, I don't want anyone to get mad at me for saying this - But I feel it needs to be said.
For my part, life is too short to waste it being mad at people. Especially friends.

For my part, I don't recall actually making fun of a poster. I have called certain posts 'troll-spew', 'spam', and suchlike, but that's just calling things as I see them. Not intentionally making fun of or belittling the poster, however much they may deserve it.
Consider also what it is that we are editing/deleting. 99.5% of it is the product either of persons seeking to stir up trouble, persons seeking to advertise unfairly, or bots. How many of them do you figure are insulted?

Debt is indeed a serious issue. But is making the site dry and impersonal the way to go about keeping it clean? When I first arrived here, one of the things that grabbed me was that the site was populated by, for lack of a better term, 'real people.' Perhaps I'm just a little odd, but seeing folks working together with good cheer to solve serious issues was appealing to me. Folks who arrive here after an initial contact from a CA could maybe use a little cheering up and de-stressing.
My $.03 [adjusted for inflation]...

It's also important to remeber that just because we may not like someone's view point doesn't mean they are trolling. I've had a couple of complaints about post being deleted or edited.
I usually post: Edited By Shazzers, and the reason why.

What may be funny to one person may not be to another. As mods, we are supposed to quiet drama, not make it worse.
Wulf - It's not the poster that may get insulted, but the overall look of the site. People can't see what was written by the original poster, only what the mod edited. By keeping it clean and professional it makes the site look better.

Also, things like troll spew and such - If the shoe was on the other foot, and the poster was calling people here stuff like that, it would be edited as a personal attack.
This is what I mean - There shouldn't be a double standard here. If posts are going to be edited it should be done without breaking the TOS with the edit.

Hey, works for me. In the interest of less drama all around, I'll leave the humor out from here on in. We'll see how that goes.

I usually say edited because...and leave it at that. My take on humorous comments while editing? If it's done because the post is from a troll, it gets right down to their level and we are above that.
