You can't go to jail for an unpaid bill. That being said, it would be helpful to have some additional information. Who was the payday lender, are they store front or internet, what state are you in, what was the original amount of the loan, have you made any payments so far?

This happened to me, too. They are using scare tactics to get their money back. These 'mediators' are hired by the company you took the cash loan from to collect on old, unpaid accounts. I received phone call after phone call from a very intimidating, rude man who said he was filing paperwork to have me arrested and even said that I should be ashamed of myself for having even taken out a loan. He hounded my mom and my grandma who were listed as references on my original application. After several of these calls ending in hang ups, he eventually scared me to tears on time on the phone. I set up a payment plan, on THEIR terms, and paid the sucker off.
This occurred a few years ago. But several months ago, I received a letter from the cash loan company who indicated that in the past they had used this 'mediator' to collect on old accounts. The letter said that as of immediately, they were cutting off all ties with them due to illegal practices in receiving the money. I was impressed that a CASH LOAN company actually recognized that. Unfortunately, my experience had already past... but perhaps it saved others.
No worries about this. You can't be arrested and they are using scare tactics. They'll berate you and say you have no legal rights... but they are lying. Call the loan company you owe and tell them what is going on.

By the way, the lender I took the cash loan out from was AmeriCash Loans and the company they sent defaulted accounts to was Department of Mediation and Resolutions.
AmeriCash sent me the letter in 2007 saying that they were no longer affiliated with them.
