We have spoken with Care One credit counseling to setup a debt settlement program. Any advice?

ALL of these companies are scams....they ARE for profit!
They take your money month after month after you have signed a limited power of atty. then don't even contact the creditors until you have money built up with them for 3-6 months...meanwhile current accounts you might have go past due, creating more credit issues...best thing to do is call all creditors and negoiate your own settlement!

Never ever EVER go with either a consolidation company or a settlement company. Why pay money to a company to handle your debt when you are just as capable? and these non-profit organizations are the biggest scams of all.
The reason they can cry non-profit is becuase the BANKS provide necassary funds to support these company's so they can purposely sit on your money, let it build up to barely enough to begin talks of payments or settlements, while in the mean time your charge off interest in accruing daily.
I have been on both sides off collections for some time now and cannot stress enough why everyone should avoid these at all costs. The best advice I can give is negotiate on your behalf, work out payments where you can get the interest stopped and start paying at the current balance, or negotiate a settlement. I know BOA will go as low as 20% and Cap1 can sometimes go as low as 50%. Just be smart and be firm, rememeber, they want your money more than anything, your in control becuase you have the cheddar. good luck

(I leave this for future Googlers, since the thread is so old)
Purcells hasn't ripped me off, they kept the people I owe at bay while I built up money with them (protected escrow account). When we had the cash, they made a settlement and the creditor accepted. Also, they prepared papers when one creditor took us to court, they ended up settling with us (thanks to us not making huge mistakes). Yeah, they make money off of you- they're a business. The bottom line is that they helped me out of some sticky situations. Money well spent.

Persels and Associates the partner in crime of Care One is 100% BS. They make promises of settling debt first the collecting fees. Not so. Their fees are deducted from you escrow every month. Once you are hooked you are assigned an in-state lawyer who is like any lawyer, a snake in the grass. They rarely return phone calls and never are able to answer any questions without referring your case to a different division who will have to call you back upon review. I would advise anyone considering this avenue of settlement to avoid at all costs using Persels. Find a local debt attorney who you can deal with face to face when needed. Persels will cost you more in the end than you owe.
