My county (Cook) and the City of Chicago now has an effective sales tax of 10.25%. That is the highest sales tax anywhere in the nation.

You know... anytime they raise cigarette taxes they claim it's so that people will want to quit smoking ... I wonder if Cook County is trying to make people quit shopping.

It's funny that I can drive 10 minutes west and the sales tax is only 6%.

What is interesting, and I would love to see this happen ... the town of Palatine is working to secede from the County over this new tax hike, and either join another county or form their own.

it too.when i worked in carol stream the difference is mind
boggling.gas, cigarettes, everything is cheaper than in old cook

I live in Cook Cnty too! When I first moved here, I was confused by the tax rates...in one place it was one rate, then down the street, it was another...no one seemed to be able to explain what the tax rate was (I later discovered the different county tax rates).

Now I go down the street to fill 'er up...much cheaper without the CC taxes!!!!
