Strange Call From Man With Mideast Accent
Date: Wed, 08/06/2008 - 07:07
I called back the number and the man literally starts screaming at me that he is Inspector Johnson and that I am in a lot of trouble, and I am going to jail for internet fraud, and I should have known to meet my responsibilities. I try to ask him what this is about, and he keeps telling me that he is the one doing the talking. He tells me he MAY be able to stop this if I am willing to immediately wire him $975.
None of this makes any sense to me, and I keep trying to get him to tell me what this is all about. Finally he just tells the Sheriff will be coming to take me to jail in 1 hour, and if I want to have a chance at stopping this, I need to call him back immediately and be willing to wire this money. He hangs up.
Well, I wait for the sheriff to come and nobody shows up.
The man called back and left a message again today. Should I do anything about this?

I took out a payday loan for $200 5 years ago and paid it back ($240 two weeks later). That is the only time I have ever used a pay day loan.
The guy would not give me any information as to what this was about

I am glad you called his bluff about the sheriff instead of paying him. Some people get scared and just hand over there personal account info to these idiots. Best thing to do is just never take a call from them again. If you want to mess with him though then sometimes it is fun to take their calls. Just realize that it is bogus and they aren't going to do squat.
My guess is it was U.S. National Bank or Cash Today.

If it's an 800 number, we could all call him back and yell at him. Wonder how much their phone bill would be if 118,000 people called for 1 minute each?

I posted it before but I set up that autodialer to call CashToday for a couple days over their 800 numbers. It was pretty slick since it was all automated and free. I could play any recorded MP3 that I wanted. I could also listen to them answer and talk to them. You get into a grey area of the law doing that though since it would be considered a DOS attack especially if a bunch of people got together and did it. I am not sure if a foreign outfit that is operating illegaly here could do much about it though.
