Old Debt collection

There's a collection company wanting to collect and old dept from me that's over 16 years old. I do owe the money however this doesn't show up on any of my credit reports. Will paying this old debt to the dept collector be bad. Remind you this is a ghost collector.

And if it's past the Statute of Limitations, what obligation other, than clearing your conscience, would you have?
If it's past the SOL, I wouldn't pay it, IMO.
