Since 1999 my husband and I have been living in a debt nightmare. We have had so many problems, losing jobs, living on one income, to where our savings were drained and our charge cards were maxed out. Now even working 2 jobs I still can't make ends meet. I have recently had a stroke and that has brought on more bills. I can't even live payday to payday because the money is spent on bills before I even get paid. I am scared to death and I know the stress is not helping my health-I am only 53 years old. Please give me some honest advice. I can't even afford to pay anyone for help as if I have another cent to pay I might as well hang it up. Can someone help me figure out what to do?? I know our credit score is not good. We have to owe just in credit card debt 75,000.00. Does anyone know of any company that would help us consolidate all of this to one payment-credit card companies state "we owe too much" and will not do this. We already have a loan we are paying back that was "to help us get out of debt" but did nothing really for us and we cannot get anymore from that company either. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Can you recommend a debt settlement company? I am so apprehensive about anything that would involve paying out any more money and even though I have mentioned to my husband about filing bankruptcy he is adament about not doing that. I have never missed paying anything, it might be a few days late but I never miss payment but I feel there is going to be a time that this is going to happen and I'm so worried. I know I am not the only person in the world with this problem and I pray about it daily, asking God to help me figure it out, but my mind is continuously going in circles.

I have to agree. Check out BK or settlement with a good company. Your health is much more important. That is your life. I just posted about a friend who is having major medical issues which have cost him his job as a pilot. credit card debt, although very stressful, is just a math problem. Medical issues are a life problem. Math is easier to solve. Don't create more health issues. Check into BK or settlement. Do a BBB search on any company to get feedback. Do a google search. Do a search on this site as well. You'll find lots of info.

I checked out Superior Debt Services and they told me I did not meet the criteria to enter their program which I think is BS. Granted, my debt is probably under $7000.00 and not as much as others but I thought they took pretty much everyone. I am depressed again because this has been going on for over a week and they just let me know they could not help.

Kathy,

I would have to say that you should check out the BK thing also. Look for a BK attorney in your area, get your paperwork (bills) together and usually the first meeting is free. They will be able to point you in the right direction. You do not need the added stress of this. There are a couple different options of BK. Which would cost much less than a settlement or management company. Some companies will not work with management/settlement companies so you still may be sol. Some BK attorney's have payment plans. And when you sign with one you will stop making payments to your creditors and you will be able to save money to pay the lawyer.

A lot of companies require that you have at least $10,000 credit card debt, and others yet $15,000. Definitely check around, as there are more than likely a few companies at least that will work with you. You just have to do a little bit of research.

In the meantime, have you tried settling or negotiating these debts with the original creditors? You might actually be able to get a lot done on your own.
