If it is a negative balance then you have to make it positive before you can use the account. For example, they won't cash a check against the account if it is negative and if you deposit the check then they will take the amount needed to make it positive.

Man- I wish the bank would freeze my account for an NSF charge.
Man- I wish the bank would freeze my account for an NSF charge. In the past, my bank would go ahead and cover every charge that came through even if my account was negative, and then later just debit my account into oblivion in NSF fees for the "favor" they were doing for me.
