Old Debt Collections letters

I have a debt that is from 1998, and I am still getting letters from collection agencies demanding the full amount. It was a department store card. I hate how it sounds, and I am trying to pay off all my debts one small payment at a time, but can this still be killing my credit this many years later? I thought 7 years was the longest it would be on my credit?

What state do you live in ? It is most likely past the statute of limitations. I would send them a debt validation letter certified mail. Do not make any promise to pay.
